This morning, after I got up and was attending to my morning bathroom needs, Geronimo & Winchester followed me into the bathroom as usual. I immediately noticed a bad smell: at first I thought it was me, b/c I was "doing my business", so to speak (I apologize for being "graphic"..
..). But then I noticed Winchester acting kinda strange, and he proceeded to lick himself vigorously on his rear - that's when I noticed he had "made a mess" all over himself. I immediately started freaking out (keep in mind that Winchester's one of my FIP cats, and I worry about him constantly - especially if I notice anything out of the ordinary w/ him). I tried to get a better look at him to see if there was any blood or mucus on him, but he was struggling and wouldn't hold still: I also tried to clean up the mess (only for my babies would I do THAT!), but he wouldn't allow that, either: he grabbed my arm and got me a good one, and was trying to bite me to keep me from cleaning up the mess - which is unusual for him b/c he's generally really laid back. Aside from that unusual behavior, he appears to be okay otherwise: he's eating (he even ate some "breakfast" this morning, which consists of canned food, and he normally ignores that), and I tested him to see if he would play any, which he did. He doesn't have a fever (his ears are warm but not hot, and his nose is cool). I THINK he's all right, and just got a case of diarrhea..

Of course, I immediately wanted to call the vet, "just in case", but it was only 7 a.m. and the vet's office wasn't open. So I followed him around to watch his behavior, and aside from having a mess on himself, he seems okay. And I don't want to go into a panic mode just yet, b/c we're in a financial bind right now and have already spent thousands of dollars on vet bills as it is. Also, I'd have to call my s/o at work to come home and take us to the vet, b/c my truck isn't running right now - and he just got a promotion at work and can't miss any work for at least 90 days. If I thought it was really an emergency I WOULD call him, regardlees of money or his job situation. Maybe that sounds "selfish", but our babies come first..

I swear, the "kids" are gonna be the death of me yet!
I already have high blood pressure as it is, from worrying about them all the time. This scare doesn't help any!!

Do any of y'all think I need to worry and call the vet? Or does it sound as if Winchester is gonna be all right and just has a case of diarrhea??

Hi - Are you certain it was diarreha? I just went thru this on the weekend with my baby and it turned out she had a abscess anal gland that had ruptured. You are going to have to see if you can get a better look at his backside. You will be able to tell, because he will have a big lump to one side of his rectum and it will be split open. Also, the smell will be really bad. Try to turn him on his side to get a better look. If so, he will need to see a vet right away. I had to take mine right away and the vet took her right back to clean up the infection. Especially if he doesn't let you near the area, you know he is in pain. Please give us an update... good luck

Thanks for the info, and thanks for your concern!
It is appreciated!
And I apologize for not responding sooner: I haven't been online at TCS since the day I posted this.

As it turns out, Winchester did just have a case of diarrhea.
The day that it occurred, I ended up calling my s/o at work to put him on "stand by", and also contacted my vet. He said it was probably just a side effect from the Interferon Winchester's been taking for his FIP (which after he mentioned it, I remembered that he did tell me that sometimes cats do get diarrhea from Interferon). Anyways, he told me to keep an eye on him, and if it got worse or if I noticed anything serious, to bring him in. So I watched him like a hawk all day long, and didn't notice him in pain or acting strangely, and he was eating & playing all right.
So I didn't see any need to bring him in. WHEW!!

He's been just fine since then! YAY!!

It's difficult not to worry when the poor guy already is battling FIP..
