My kitten that is about 10 weeks old is has been acting strange today. He has been distant and lethargic. He has not eaten much, and he has acted like he wanted to throw up several times, but can't get anything up. He is not playing at all, and is just generally not acting like himself. I am really worried, but we have no emergency vet here. He has been in the litter box several times, and I can't tell if he's trying to have a bowel movement and can't or what. He is acting depressed. He will just look at me with these sad eyes. I don't know what to do. I will definitely take him to the vet Monday, but what do y'all think?

How long has it been since he's eaten? Have you tried different foods, including people foods like boiled chicken? If it's been more than 24 hours, you may want to try assist feeding or syringe feeding to get food into his body--go to www.assistfeed.com for more information about techniques before trying it as technique is very important (i.e. squirting toward the back of the throat is dangerous and can cause the kitty to get food in his lungs). If he's not drinking, getting water into him is also important as they can get dehydrated very quickly.

You might also try giving a little hairball remedy just in case he has a hairball or is otherwise constipated. If there is an ER vet in another town, I would suggest calling them to get their thoughts and recommendations as well.

Well, my kitten didn't seem to be getting any better, and he wasn't eating, so I called the vet in a nearby town and took him in. She said that he had no temp, heart and lungs sounded fine, bowels sounded fine, etc. and she could find nothing noticably wrong with him. She thought that maybe he had eaten a leaf off a house plant, and it was making him sick. She kept him to give him iv fluids and watch him. I hate that he had to stay, but I feel better knowing that he is being taken care of.

Be very careful of having houseplants: some are toxic to cats! There should be a link or info somewhere on TCS that lists the poisonous ones: I'll try to locate it for you, or maybe someone else will know of it and post it.

I'm glad to hear that your baby's doing better and continues to improve!
I'll send more good vibes your way!

Just talked to the vet, and he is doing much better today. He is back to playing and getting right in your face to try and "eat" your lips, she said! I'm so glad! She said he could probably go home late this afternoon, if he continued to do well. I have removed all house plants!
