or do they take lessons??

Yesterday, my s/o and I took a last mini-vacation down to Galveston before the weather turns colder. On the way back, we ran into some really bad weather - high winds, and heavy rain. My s/o had a difficult time keeping the truck on the road, even though he was only going about 30-40 miles an hour. He had enough sense to slow down, and would have pulled over if the conditions got much worse. But apparently, most of the other drivers were either stupid, or just plain don't give a
. They were passing us by so fast that they made us look like we were practically standing still. I don't understand stupidity like that.
One of the vehicles that passed us lost control and flipped over about a mile or so down the road. And we saw numerous ambulances on the other side, going in the direction that we just came from: so you just knew that there had been more accidents....

What really irks me about idiots like that is the fact that they're not only risking their own lives, but eveyone else's, also.
If they care to take a chance and play w/ their own life, that's their decision: but to endanger others just irks me to no end.
Don't people care anymore??

I had to take a Valium to calm down b/c I was such a nervous wreak, and I gave one to my s/o too, b/c even HE was getting agitated - and stuff like that usually doesn't bother him. But that's how nerve-wracking it was. Thank God the weather got better before got to the Houston area! They drive like maniacs there all the time as it is, and most of them don't slow down even if the weather's bad. I think I would have had a heart attack if we would have had to drive amongst the lunatics AND the bad weather combined!

I know exactly what you mean as I come across insane drivers all the time. We have an extremely high death toll over here on the roads. The most important thing is, the more safely you drive and are aware of idiots around you, the less likely you are to be in an accident. I'm talking about accidents that the other driver would be to blame in. We don't want those either

This is exactly WHY I've only been involved in 2 accidents in over 30 years of driving experience - because I'm ALWAYS watching the other person and my surroundings!
And of those 2 times, the accidents weren't my "fault". The first accident occurred when some woman turned in front of me, and the 2nd one was when a deer jumped out in front of my truck. Both times, I was cleared of any negligence on my part.

My s/o is a safe & cautious driver, too. He's about the only person I trust behind the wheel if I'm not driving.

Here in California when there is bad weather over the "Grapevine" the Highway Patrol escorts the cars through. That way, there is fewer accidents. But we do have another highway that is called "Blood Alley". There has been so many deaths because of reckless people trying to pass other cars.

omg I know.

when I lived in Colorado it always blew me away...
It would be snowing so heavily you couldn't see more than a foot in front of you and what you could see looks like star wars, and people would be be flying past!

crazy if you ask me...

here's not much better though (CA). people drive crazy here ALL THE TIME, not just in bad weather...

Idiot drivers are very near the TOP of my "piss me off list". ESPECIALLY those who choose to drive like morons on the Highway or Interstate! My cousin was cut off by some
after they cut over FIVES LANES of traffic on the turnpike!!! He didn't hit my cousin, but only because my cousin swerved off the road to avoid it!! He lost control of the car and ended up hitting 2 other cars (all at 60mph). Three people died in the crash and my cousin in still in coma from head trauma. AND THAT
who stared it all, just drove off, never to be caught!!!! Ughhh...

Sorry to rant...this is a touchy subject.

People are idiots here too. My stepcousins were in a bad accident because of a guy that cut them off while he was getting on the freeway. They tried to move to the left lane, but a semi was about to pass them. The choice was get hit by the car or get hit by a semi. The car hit them. The passenger was killed, the driver severely injured (pelvis broken in 7 places). The man in the other car is being charged with vehicular manslaughter...it happened at 12:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday! You honestly never know. The cops told the survivor not to blame herself...she was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. People have no concern for others.....

In Wisconsin Hwy 41 runs from Milwaukee to the UP Michigan border. Were I live around Appleton, WI we have nicknamed the hwy "the racetrack" . The morning/evening commute-people give you dirty looks if you aren't driving at least 70 mph in the "slow" lane.
The first couple of snow's are bad too-people have forgotten how to drive in the snow and lots of accidents.

How well I remember THAT!! When I lived back home, I would avoid Hwy 41 like the plague!
especially during the EAA convention. I would drive miles out of my way, just to avoid all that horrible traffic that occurred during the EAA.

And as you say, the first few snowfalls are the worst!
Everyone "forgets" from one year to the next, which, you would think, isn't possible!
How can you forget, when you go thru it every year??
What would really irk me would be the idiots who were yacking on their cell-phones, during a blizzard when all concentration should be on the road - not on a conversation!

But if you think 41's bad, GailC, you should get a load of these Houston drivers!!
It's nothing compared to that!

Jarvis & Sophiecushion, I'm sorry to hear that your loved ones were involved in serious accident.
It's just totally senseless that the "innocent" people who are trying to drive safely end up being the ones who usually suffer. It's just so unfair!

We have a "blood alley" here too - Hwy 190. The area between Livingston & Onalaska is just horrid: there are bad accidents there every day.
I hate driving on that road....

Hmmm..let me guess. They were either F150s or larger or some form of an SUV?

I know not all truck or SUV drivers are like this, but it seems that when you add AWD to a vehicle then the person behind the wheel thinks they're invincible. Metro Detroit was Famous for those type of drivers. Heck, sleet was like a second coating of pavement to them.

I know here that SUVs tend to forget that while they can go in snow, stopping is a whole different matter. So they are the ones that tumble into the ditch because they are going too fast for the conditions.

Most of them were SUV's and large trucks. But there were also plenty of smaller cars, and even one idiot on a motorcycle.

When I bought my 4X4 truck in Wisconsin, I knew I'd have better traction on the road and especially in the snow (which is why I got it!). But I STILL slowed down if the conditions were bad -- most of the other 4X4 vehicles still drove like idiots, though.
4X4's are meant for better traction & control: just b/c you have one doesn't mean that it's safer to drive fast in bad conditions. But apparently, some people think you can.

Just the other day while driving to work, an old double semi (carrot truck) was merging into traffic. He not only caused me to slow way down since he did not have the brains of a turnip, but he immediately changed to the middle lane almost causing a big accident. There was a car in that lane too! I just thank God that there wasn't an accident because of the close proximedy, I would have been involved too. It happened right in front of me!

Yup!! Most of the larger vehicle owners forget that even though their truck is heavier, you still hydroplane pretty much between 45-55 mph or over. I thought it was ingeneous when I found out that Ohio had a law that in bad weather conditions, it's mandatory 55 mph.

(yes I can admit that now that I no longer live in Michigan, Ohio people
).
