My 6 month old kitten is very lively and likes to eat lots of different foods (basically anything going)! He especially likes curries as i cook a lot of them and he smells the aromas and starts "meow"ing. I gave him a plate full of Calcuttan beef curry this morning and he finished it in seconds! Does anyone have a cat who also likes to eat curry?

Curry here is a SPICY dish ... if that is what you feed him PLEASE dont do that anymore... see cats can get very sick from it ...

My Ginger enjoys an occasional bite of Thai chicken satai, seasoned with green curry.

My Siamese cat, Susie, loved curry. I didn't make it often, but whenever I made curried chicken she would go nuts for it. I always let her have a little bit and I was fortunate in that she never got sick since at that time I was pretty ignorant about giving cats certain people food.

I have a daughter from Calcutta. I cook LOTS of Indian food and always have, actually.

Classic curry contains ONIONS and GARLIC. These are not good for cats and can cause anemia. Plus the effects of the myriad spices (including sometimes WHOLE SEEDS) is not known, but it cannot be great.

BTW, I had a cat who loved my husband's chili! But we did try to keep her OUT of it. She did progress to chronnic diarrhea and IBD, later in life. Cats sometimes develop a taste for human foods, and when they get hold of what they crave (even rare episodes), overindulge ... even with innocuous ingredients, this can lead to chronic gut problems.

Please, be careful!

Thanks for all the replies. When i give him curry I take out the pieces of meat and mash those up. I will try not to give him curry in future, its just that he always smells it cooking and starts meowing repeatedly!

I try not to let my cats eat hot and spicy foods, but occasionally they will get into something I wasn't expecting them too... *sigh* My oldest cat likes Kidney Bean Masala and some kinds of chinese. :p Needless to say, it's usually a tiny taste of something that he gets before I take it away. Silly kitty!

My cat Tucker's favorite foods are baby spring mix salad greens
He'll "Mew" as soon as we take them out of the refrigerator and won't stop until he gets his salad. He's a wierd one!

im having a problem with my cat - as soon as he smells anything tasty esp meat, he's at it straight away! He even goes inside the refrigerator when its open!

i do feed him enough cat food! honest!

im taking him to be castrated soon though (eeek, crosses legs), maybe he will be less hungry after that!

That won't affect his appetite. I'm guessing he's around 6 months old? Growing kittens always seem to be hungry.

I agree with sharky, no curry for kitties. The stuff tastes and smells awful anyways.

That's one opinion.

I personally love the taste and smell of curried food. As I said before, I didn't make it often but when I did, I gave my Siamese girl a bit of the meat. She loved it, ate it occasionally and lived a very healthy life. She had one vet visit for illness (bladder infection) in her whole life so I think it really just depends on your particular cat. As to the onion and garlic present, I believe the flavour of those will be in the meat but not the actual onion or garlic pieces so if you are just giving them a little of the meat, I can't see it doing a lot of harm. Now if you are giving her this curry frequently, then I would advise against it.

I thought Harry was the only weirdo! He was going nuts last night when I was cooking curry and tried to lick my plate after (needless to say I snatched it away) Another time I had a creamy Indian curry and he went for that too
.

I just don't want any more diarrhoea from him so I'm not letting him near the stuff.

I have researched a lot into foods (as mine has an intolerance to many foods and is now on a special diet) that human food Is a big no no as felines can not break down our food and as a result can effect major organs, for example many years ago one of our family cats use to get fed curries etc... she ended up with a shut down of her liver and kidneys. My rescue cat now when I got her a year ago would beg me for curries which I didn't give her and then found out she had a colon infection and skin allergies hence why she is on a special diet!

You haven't read (or heard the song) "Bustopher Jones" by T.S. Eliot, have you? (I don't have a cat, but I sure do love that musical.)

"When I'm seen in a hurry, there's probably curry
At the Siamese or at the Glutton!"
