On Thursday we had a huge snowfall and the temperature dropped into the teens. Since then the temp has dropped lower and lower, getting to about 5 degrees last night. I know how important a full belly is for cats who live outside in cold weather.

Since the snow came a flock of starlings has taken over my yard. This morning they ate 4 cups of cat chow in less than an hour! I know the cats haven't had a chance to eat since the snow fell on Thursday because the bowls have been empty within minutes of each filling.

When it isn't so cold, the cats always come for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. and for supper at 7:00. They are like clockwork. But, when it is cold, they stay where it is warm, so I just leave the food out for them so they can come by whenever. But, now the darned birds are eating every piece! No matter where I hide the food, it is gone in minutes!

Sigh....I just feel so bad for the cats -- to be so cold and hungry at the same time. Anyone have any ideas on how to keep the birds away?

Believe it or not Renae- Catnip will keep the birds from eating the food. Buy a large quantity of dry (organic) nip and mix it in with the dry kibble. The smell will repel the birds and the catnip will give fiber to the cats. Once it is mixed in with their food, they don't want to roll or play in it, they will simply eat it and become happy ferals afterward.....
Keep the unused portion stored in a covered container in your fridge.

Oh wonderful!!!! I have a baggy full of Cosmic Catnip. I'm going to go put it out right now. Thanks so much for the idea.

Woo Hoo....stoned ferals!
After all this catnip they won't care that it is so cold out!
