Variety in day to day cat feedings? Sharky?

Is it possible for cats to get bored with their food?

The breeder I'm getting my little boy from feeds her little ones EVO. I'm perfectly happy with this and everything I've read about it. But there is only one wet food can available for EVO. Does that reduce the variety in their meals?

At the store where I would buy it, the owner also recommends a raw diet....Then there is the question of wet vs. dry.

After reading the amazing thread that everyone has contributed to about cat food and why you feed that brand to your babies I've kind of come up with my own plan for my cat.

Ultimately I'd like to have him on a small wet food breakfast that consists of a mix of wet Evo and a small portion of raw. A 1/3 a cup of dry Evo for grazing during the day and a dinner much like breakfast.

Is this too much variety in his diet? Am I fretting over something silly? Thanks in advance guys! I just want to do the right thing for my little guy.

EVO now has many new single meat no grain flavors ask at your local shop ... they are the 95% meat series

IMHO a done right homemade or raw is best

A cat naturally preys on over 1000 species. They have a fixed territory, if they only ate 1 or 2 'flavours' of prey, their territory would soon be out of food and they'd die (animals that have a narrow food-range are usually nomadic). It is natural for them to look for variety, in order not to over-hunt one type of food and deplete their supply. Some studies have suggested that cats stop being able to taste and smell food if the same is offered over and over again, as a natural instinctive way to drive them to find something different - so I think variety is good and more natural for them than eating the same thing over and over

Whew! Thanks Epona, I'm so glad to hear it. I always hear that transitioning their food should be done slowly and I kind of thought that changing food on a cat was a bad thing.

But I suppose changing food as long as it's done slowly is okay?

This is hilarious but...I hate cooking people food but figuring out what to feed my kitties has been really fun!

Dry food should be changed gradually as if done suddenly can cause an upset stomach - but wet food is usually fine. I currently have 6 different brands and at least 10 different flavours of wet food and just feed a different one each meal, no problem at all. Just one brand of dry though, and if I were going to change to a new brand I'd do it over 7-10 days.

IMO I'd stick to one meal of dry to nibble on and the wet/raw for supper. Our guys get a different can every night, sometimes its some left towards the next meal if I use a bigger can.

They mainly get beef, chicken (most often), lamb, turkey and some seafood about every 4th or 5th can. We include cheese as treats and when fixing hamburger meals, they get some bites of raw hamburger.

I give Blossom a var. of wet & dry & ocassionally raw chicken which she loves.

If you are lucky you'll find several brands your cat(s) will eat. Unfortunately our two won't eat anything except 2 flavours of Merrick's. I'd gladly feed them other brands which are much less expensive but they won't have it!

Haha, oooh thats just it isn't it? What WILL they eat? Well I'm switching my new teen-cat from Science Diet Kitten to EVO. We'll see how he likes that. He's got a URI right now so I don't want to change anything while he's feeling junky.

Is the farmers market a good place to get fresh chicken? I'd be so terrified to give a cat raw chicken from Publix or chicken meat treated with hormones. D:

EVO and most grain free are NOT really good ideas with UTI prone kitties...

Tyson has a LINE of HORMONE( no hormones can be used in the USA in poultry)/ steroid ( see hormones) and ANTIBIOTIC free chicken ... Most stores by me carry it

www.barfdirect.com they have LOTS of types of raw and dehydrated foods plus they have only a 10 lb minimum ...

So interchanging brands of wet food is okay? Good to hear because I've been doing that with Julius between Merrick and Go Natural (can't make up my mind) and he doesn't have any problems with it. But I was getting ready to just stick to one brand.

It's fine to switch wet, certainly if he has no problem with it then there's no need to stick to one brand!

I never used to bother switching gradually with dry when I just had Radar - he has a stomach like a goat, nothing ever bothers him except sometimes he eats too fast. Never had a problem with switching dry when it was just him - Sonic on the other hand does get soft stools if his dry is switched too quickly, but he is fine with switching wet.

Oh dang it, did I say UTI? I meant he has an upper respiratory infection. Oops! Poor baby was sneezing on me all night. It's kind of cute but I feel so bad for him. I hope his meds kick in soon.

Thank GOD he doesn't have a UTI.
