Hi, I have talked about Missy before on here, I thought she was always hungry because of her teeth hurting, I have been watching her close and feeding her soft food. I was wrong, she eats allot and in a couple hours she acts like she has not eaten for days again. She seems OK otherwise, should I be worried about this?

my elderly cat did the same thing when her thyroid went hyperactive.
IT is a common condition in elderly cats.

Definitely have thyroid and other blood tests done. Hyperthyroidism is tops on the list for cats eating a lot and not gaining weight. If the tests come back normal, it's possible she may be going a bit senile. Cognitive Dysfunction Disorder (kind of like Alzheimer's) is more commonly studied and recognized in dogs, but vets are started to recognize the symptoms in cats as well.

Hi, Its been a while and she still eats all the time and seems to be getting thinner. I think its time to have her checked for a thyroid problem like most of you think it could be. Lately she has started to crawl under the heavy blanket on our bed to sleep like she is cold or something. I don't know if that is thyroid related or not.

I have a neighbor that has 2 kitties with thyroid problems. One of them has to come home on their lunch break every day to make sure they get their shots on time! They got really fat after they started the shots though, they're so obese now that that couldn't be good either! Good luck to you and keep us posted!

Eating all the time and not gaining weight is a classic symptom of hyperthyroid. Diabetes would include the eating, but also increased drinking and increased urination. Being temperature sensitive could be a symptom of anemia or just old age. The best bet would be to take her to the vet and have a complete geriatric panel done, which includes kidney function, liver function, CBC and thyroid. Good luck!

Silly question, but if you were concerned about her in October, and folks suggested you get her tested at the vets, why have you waiting two whole months before thinking that it might make sense to have her tested?

Please, get her to the vet! She needs to be seen!

Hi, a update, Missy went in for a checkup and blood tests again. She lost 1/2 a pound and her heart beat is on the fast side but the blood tests were all good and the vet didn't find anything odd. She wants to do a chest Xray on her to see if anything odd shows up there. She told me what she is looking for and I didn't need to hear it, but she is good and her gut feelings are normally on the right track. She wonders if Missy has cancer......
