Hi this is my first post here

I have 4 kitties, and one who is sick with some weird sympoms, and I'm looking for some insight.. he will be going to the vet tommorow, but I thought I'd post here too.

He is a 1 year old neutered male.. always inside untill about 4 weeks ago, which is also when all the weird stuff started. (He slipped out, not intentionally.. but because he sneaks out so well, we let him out in our fenced yard 15-20 mins a day now) It started with his mouth looking wet. Then about a week later, he had brown stuff around his mouth. We thought it was maybe he got in a fight with one of the ferals we feed and maybe it was just some dried blood. He is UTD on his vaccines so we weren't too worried. He ate fine, used the litter box fine, etc.

Well, the brown stuff around his mouth didn't go away, but I dislocated my knee and couldn't get him to the vet till now.. but he also started drooling, not eating dry food well, and when he groomed himself, everywhere he licked had a brown color, like there was blood in his saliva. (He also started to smell bad...) Last night I gave him a bath, and the water when I rinsed him was brown, like dried blood. I have looked in this mouth, and can't really see anything weird (as far as I can see, he's a grumpy cat and starts growling if you push it)

He still eats canned food great, and he's lost a little weight, but he's not skinny (he was plump to begin with) He gets treated w/ flea preventitive monthly, and I deworm my cats periodically (with a dewormer that treats roundworms, tape worms, and hookworms)

He hasn't been lethargic till the last 3 days or so, and I am pretty worried. I can finally walk a little so he sees the vet tomorrow, but I was looking for any help anyone has!

Thanks in advance

Whitney

My only guess about the drooling is maybe he got into something outside? Some cats will try to munch on plants they shouldn't. Or smelling something odd and drooling, though that wouldn't explain the weight loss. The brown could be because he's outside and probably enjoying his visits by rolling in the dirt.

In the meantime, don't let him out at all and maybe do your best to keep him inside in the future - unless you can walk him on a harness and leash. And if you can get outside to inspect your yard, look for anything that could have potentially made him sick. It will help if you can give the vet a little information to go on.

Good luck at the vet tomorrow.

well, from looking around on the internet, he has all the symptoms Plasmacytic Gingivitis Stomatitis .. drooling, bloody saliva, only wanting canned food, etc. I will bring this disease up to the vet and see what she thinks.. we just lost a kitty to cancer.. any diagnosis better than that, I can deal with..

My Stumpy has that disease and the symptoms were not exactly the same. It doesn't come on overnight like in this case. Diagnosis of this particular disease requires a biopsy of his gums.

It sounds to me that he got into something bad outside.

Strange wings has good advice for you there; I add my prayers and healing thoughts/best wishes for your sweet little guy
and HOPE all goes well at the vet tomorrow
-- hope (s)he can diagnose the problem and that it's something quickly fixable and that your little guy is back to his healthy, normal self SOON!
You, too, btw...

the only reason I wonder about getting into something.. he hasn't vomited at all, no loose stools, and the blood in the saliva ( it wasn't dirt, it was dried blood.. which is why his fur smelled..) is just weird.. He never went outside the yard.. which is toddler, dog, and stray kitty proof. He has never chewed on any houseplants (as some of my other kitties do) .. it's just all weird, and I hope he is going to be ok. I must admit, I play favorites, and he is my favorite kitty (and my closest kitty friend
)
