Well, this is weird. My kitten won't have canine teeth.

My 6 month old kittens went in to the vet this morning to get neutered. The vet just called to say everything went fine, HOWEVER, one of my kittens (Nigel) won't be getting his adult canine teeth in.
He lost all 4 canines about 2 months ago and the vet said that he must have just lost them early. Well, Nigel saw a different vet today and he was curious because his lower jaw seemed more narrow than normal (he's still a cutey though
) and he didn't see any adult teeth buds coming through yet. He did an x-ray and did not see any tooth structure there.
I have never heard of this. The vet did assure me there would not be any complications from this. It's mainly just cosmetic now.
It's just so weird that I had to share with others.

Well, anything is possible! That is good that Nigel won't have any complications from the lack of canines; cats who don't have to hunt and kill their prey probably don't have as much need for these as do cats in the wild.

Odo says to tell Nigel that he's lucky that his teeth are missing because they aren't growing in rather than missing because they've been pulled. Odo says having teeth pulled is no fun at all--he only has one canine left. Once his were pulled and healed, he went back to being his normal self, so Nigel should be just fine.

Hi. This is my first post, though I've been reading for a few days.

My Cat Mo (who died a couple of years ago at approximately 17) came to us with no canine teeth. He was a rescue and we assumed he had a rough life and lost them in a fight or something.

8 years after we got him his canine teeth suddenly grew in. It was VERY bizarre.

Its not that uncommon. One of my older cats had that problem - he actually still managed to hunt pretty well.

Happens in people too. I don't have my canines and I'm missing 4 molars. Its just a developmental abnormality where the buds for the adult teeth should develop during embryogenesis. But for one reason or another they don't. So once you lose the baby teeth there's nothing underneath to replace it.
