World Records

Ever wonder if you might have the heaviest, oldest or fastest cat? Maybe your cat is a contender for the longest whiskers. We love breaking records and have been keeping track of officially broken records for more than 50 years.

Guinness Book of World Records:
Sir Hugh, the managing director of Arthur Guinness, Son and Co., Ltd. created the Guinness book of world records in 1954 when he couldn't find the answer to the question, "what is the fastest bird?" He decided that what modern Britain needed was a book that would tell people quickly and concisely just what was biggest, smallest, fastest, slowest, shortest, longest, etc., about as many things as possible. It could be distributed to the many British pubs where Guinness stout was sold and where it would be useful in settling all those arguments that are peculiar to pubs.
Today we use the Guinness Book of World Records to keep track of record-breaking moments all over the world. We are so enamored with record-breaking that there are many unofficial sources as well.

Record-breaking Cats
It's no surprise that there would be a few world record cats out there. After all, they've been sharing our homes for thousands of years. Here are a few official and unofficial record breakers for all you cat trivia lovers.

Longest Cat
Snowbie, owned by Lorna Sutherland of Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, measured 103 cm (40.8 inches) from his nose to the tip of his tail, on November 21, 1997, when he was four years old.

Longest Whiskers
The record for the longest whiskers goes to Missi, Maine Coon living with Kaija Kyllonen in Finland. Her whiskers measured 19 cm (7.5 inches) in 2005.

Heaviest Cat
Himmy who lived in Cairns, Queensland weighed in at an amazing 21.3 kg (46.8 lbs). He was a neutered tabby that lived to be 10 years old and passed away of respiratory failure.

The Guinness Book of World records no longer takes records for the largest pets as they don't want to encourage owners to overfeed their pets.

Smallest Cat
Mr. Peebles, a domestic cat in Central Illinois holds the record at 3 pounds. He is 6.1 inches high.

Lightest Cat
A blue point Himalayan named Tinker Toy is reported to be the lightest cat in a 1993 issue of the National Enquirer. He weighed 1 pound 8 oz and passed away in November 1997.

Oldest Cat
The oldest reliably recorded cat was a female tabby called Ma. Ma lived to be 34 years old and died on November 5th 1957.

A cat named Crème Puff in Austin, Texas was born on August 3rd 1967 and had her 38th birthday ub August 2005.

The all-time un-recorded senior-citizen cat record is held by Puss, a cat who lived with Mrs. T. Holway of Devon, England, until she died on November 29, 1939 just one day after her 36th birthday.

The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that GRANPA was the world's longest-living cat and the Guinness award "worlds oldest cat" was given to GRANPA, in 1998. GRANPA lived to be 34 years, 2 months and 4 hours, and died on April 01, 1998. The previous record was 34 years and 1 day and had been set in 1957 by Ma from England.

Most Traveled Cat
A cat named Hamlet escaped from his cage on a flight from Toronto, Canada, and traveled 965,600 Km (600,000 miles) in just seven weeks, until he was caught in February 1984.

Most Expensive Cat
A California Spangled Cat was bought for $24,000 in January 1987. The cat was displayed in the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book in 1986.

Best Mouser
A tortoise shell cat named Touser caught 28,899 mice and numerous other critters in her lifetime of working at the Glenturret Distillery. A monument was erected in her honor on the distillery grounds.

I'd have to re-measure Ivory's when she'll allow me too, but at last check, her whiskers were 7 inches long when she was 11 months old.
