My friend had her kitty, Hobbes, cremated. It gave her a sense of peace. She had a memorial placed in a cemetery and keeps his ashes by her mirror so she can visit with him in the mornings as she gets ready. Her other cat Hide has taken up Hobbes' old morning ritual, he climbs up to the sink where she stands, puts his paws on her chest and rubs his face all over hers. It's really amazing. It's really made her feel comforted.
You are doing a great thing for him, I know it will be hard but having you near will make him so happy.
Also, if you ask your vet you may be able to have the vet come out to your car when the time comes (so you don't have to take him inside the clinic)...or even sit on the lawn with him while the vet attends to him.
