Hey all,

My wife and I rather abruptly acquired a kitten last weekend. We were planning on getting two kittens at the same time early next year, but we spoke with a breeder who was downsizing her program and got a really great deal. So we have 1 kitten now, and will probably get him a playmate in 3-4 months. He's my first cat ever (had allergies as a kid), and my wife's grown up with cats but he's her first that's all hers/ours.

His name is Juniper, and he's a blue abyssinian. A little scared at first and hiding underneath bookcases and underneath the couch, we sectioned off "his room" so he can't get out without really wanting to, and he's been much happier. He's taken to hiding behind the washer and dryer, and will pop out to play, eat, explore, and so on, and when he hears our voices he starts looking for us.

He's 13 weeks old, born on June 15th, and is very loving and playful. Super-playful! So, of course, here's the obligatory pictures:

How cute!!!! You are so lucky! I have allergies to cats as well, but as long as I bathe the kitties once a month I'm fine. I can tell they needs bathes again because I get hives on my neck or anywhere sensitive they touch me. Most people are only allergic to cat dander and if you wash them once a month you should be fine. Start bathing him now so he gets used to them and doesn't throw a fit every time! Good luck and Welcome!

I am new here too.
I have a kitten who was born on April 20th. He is a Russian Blue and his name is Tolstoy. My four year old cat is a Calico and has some of the same or similar coloring as the "blue" along with gold and white. Her name is Callie. It may not be an original name but I think it is pretty nevertheless!

On Wednesday we took down the barrier for his room, so he had the run of the kitchen and the laundry room. He was a little scared of suddenly having more space, but warmed up to it pretty quickly once he found some good hiding spots. Very cute that he hides, and then quickly comes to be by us whenever one of us started to leave or move around.

My wife did a bad thing, though. She poured herself a glass of water, and Juniper was interested in the condensation on the glass, sniffing and kind of licking it. She thought "Hmm, he seems to like it cold, I'll give him an ice cube." She put 2 in his water bowl.

Of course, he thought the ice cube was an exciting new toy. So he started pawing at it and seeing it splash around, and he got really excited and making a huge mess. So she took it out, but then he would look in the waterbowl for the cube -- and make out his reflection! So then he starts splashing in the bowl and looking back in there, making an even bigger mess!

Thankfully we've switched out his waterbowl, and made sure he was drinking, and this morning we put his old one back in another spot, and he drank from it without splashing it everywhere

It sounds like Juniper was having a lot of fun
I have never tried an icecube as a toy
