I was at Pep Boys yesterday, so i decided to go around the plaza and hit PetSmart, so i could get some more hairball wet food.

I was in looking around, and they had some Nutro dry on sale, so i got some of that, and the wet food. my SO was looking at the cats in cages, and noticed one wasent opening its eyes, it was mouth breathing, and had green stuff coming out of his nose. so he went and told a manager, and they said" oh yea, we called the place they come from, and they said they will pick him up TOMORROW".

i was LIVID.

SO i found ANOTHER manager, and told them. they told me " i jsut called, and they said they wont pick him up till tomorrow, and that WE cant take him to the vet, im going to check on him" so he did, changed his food and litter, and washed his hands and came back. i was like, " ya know, that is contagious"

hes like" i washed my hands" i said " i MEANT for your other cats!" he was like " oh, i didnt know" then he said something about calling the other manager to see what they could do, and walked away.

mind you, this "manager" was like 20 years old, and didnt look like he knew his BUTT from a hole in the ground. I plan to call the place they get the cats from today, to see what the did/didnt do. Morons

That isn't right.... sick cat needs to go to the vets period... At the risk of being a um.... birch I would notify area officials. I don't think they should be selling them if they can't care for them properly and someone who can really do something about it should look into the situation.

Was Petsmart's vet clinic in the building too? I think its called Bayfield? If so, I would have reported the cat's condition and hopefully they could at least put the cat in an isolated cage away from the others.

I hate how they treat animals there!! I went the other day to the adoption cages and I asked to see a pretty little tuxedo.... well, he was hyper from being cooped up all day and he jumped out of my arms and eventually got underneath the cages. I was trying to coax him out with featherwand and I guess the "keeper" got tired of waiting on us so he reaed under the cage and pulled the cat out, about a 12lb cat.... by it's paw!
I know it hurt the cat!

poor baby sick in such an awful place...
I know I've posted about how worried I am over the cats in one of our local pet smart stores. They keep them locked up in cages in a back room. It's so dark (I've never been there during an adoption clinic, but I know other stores keep the lights on when they're not actively showing them) that you couldn't see to figure out whether or not the cats look sick or are even in the cages

I noticed the animals they sell don't have to sit in the dark all day. And the hamsters have toys...

The Petsmart in my area has a sign indicating where the adopted cats are from. They change the signs accordingly since different rescue organizations rotate and offer cats for adoption. I would have just called the org directly but I'm not sure if your location had that notation.

We take excellent care of the kittes in our petsmart, it is the only "shelter" we have, the rest is foster homes. However, I've been to 2 other petsmart stores in the city and it wasn't nearly as clean, etc. We would NEVER leave a sick cat there. We are in major debt with our vets but if a cat has something wrong with it, it gets pulled and checked out right then.

I would call and complain to the organization who has the cats AND the humane society or whoever else you can call, as well as the head store manager there.

I've never seen anything like that at our Petco or Petsmart (both have cages for adoptable kitties). You should definitely contact that rescue. And maybe find out who they are and talk to Petsmart corporate about it. That's pretty awful.

My only peeve with Petsmart is lately ours is out of a lot of things I buy.
So I end up making a trip to Petco or Target/Wal-Mart to get the rest of what I need.

Most of them are adoption agencies / shelters who have limited resources, they rely on petsmart to tell them how ill the cat is to decide when to take it to a vet, so it depends if they told the shelter that the cat was that sick on whether they would rush it to a vet. I would have asked them which adoption shelter they were from and called them directly

That is just insane! I can't believe they just left that kitty in there. Especially for everyone to see!

Our petsmart in Cedar Rapids, IA gets there kittens from the shelter. I'm not sure if thats where yours gets them from.

Thats pathetic they wont pick up the cat. They obviously arent a very good rescue. UNLESS its animal control. Animal control does just leave them there most of the time when they are sick. The Petco we use is almost 2 hours away and we still run up as soon as we hear one of our babies are sick.

The poor thing...that PetsMart obviously isn't up to caring for the sick animals. There's no way on this earth I'd let any cat of mine be there!

Let us know if/when you get ahold of of the rescue

Oh the poor baby! I can't believe they were just leaving him there like that. There aren't very many Petsmarts around where I live, mostly Petco's. But the one Petsmart I don't even think they had cats in the store if I'm remembering correctly. I think in my county the shelters put them in the Petco's because there are many more of them.

I really like the Petsmart and when I have the time do travel the 45 minutes to go there. It's ashame though that they are not more on top of their animals and staff!

I'm sure that the fault there lies with the rescue, not with Petsmart. Petsmart basically donates the space in their stores for rescues to showcase their adoptable pets. Petsmart employees aren't vets and they aren't rescue workers. They are retail employees, and most of them happen to love animals. As part of their job, they scoop litter and feed and water the animals. But frankly, if they called the rescue about the poor little sick kitty and the rescue dropped the ball and refused to allow them to get health care for the cat their hands are tied.

I agree, call the rescue directly! They are the ones who are ultimately responsible for that kitty.

That is not good, but i'm glad you said something. At the Petsmart near us they sponser our shelter where I work at. The staff there is VERY knowledgable, and the Banifield hospital in there even has their vets look over our kitties before the go into the cages to make sure they're in prime condition for adoption. If they even hear one of ours sneeze they immedately call our shelter to have our AC officers pick them up and take them back to the shelter for medication. They are VERY strict about it too...they don't want ANY sick ones up there for risk of contaminating everything. I hate to hear that your local petsmart isn't doing its job well- that is unacceptable. I do hope that kitty gets the help it needs soon. I am very glad though that our Petsmart is very good to us and does not let anyone bring up sick kitties/are prompt of calling us to retrieve them if they suspect illness.

It's Banfield. Not all PetSmarts have them. I use Banfield as my Vet, where I go is great & I like that there are lots of locations & they have Saturday hours.

Our petsmart doesn't have a clinic. The petsmart employees don't do anything with the cats except check them twice a day. The volunteers are the ones that come in twice a day to change litter, feed, check the cats, exercise them, etc. Maybe yours is the same and the store really has nothing to do with it except the space.

i jsut called the shelter the kitty came from thats using PetSmart, and they were lie, yea, ok, well go get him tomorrow. i was like no, TODAY, or i call the SPCA, and i can go check. she hung up

SOOOO, i will check tomorrow, since its a 50 mile drive for me. if hes not gone, there in deep doo doo.

and as for PetSmart, yea, they are retail employees. BUT, they shouldnt have a 20 year old " i done give a crap" attitude guy on duty to care for animals, and he was the STORE MANAGER!!!! i have 1/2 the mind to call petsmarts corp. office!!

if it were me as the manager, i would have taken that kitty to the emergency vet thats around the corner, and changed it to the adoption agency. i was ready to call the athorities. the emergency # for the shelter was only a vet that wouldnt help without say so, moron.

It always breaks my heart to see the kitties in the cages at Petsmart. My mom catches and neuters strays that she finds around her work (she can't catch the mom that keeps getting pregnant) and takes them to Petsmart sometimes, and she used to volunteer there. I guarantee you the cats that she worked with were WELL taken care of! I hope the kitty you found gets helped soon. That seems horrible. It seems those employees just go about their daily lives not thinking about the animals.

Well, I adopted all three of my cats from SAD-SAC, the adoption agency that works in conjunction with PetSmart and they have all their cats spayed and neutered, vaccinated, etc from Banfield, the vet clinic located within PetSmart. Now, had that been me, I would've called one of the gals that works for SADSAC and told them the situation. I know how dedicated they are and one of them would've rushed right down and taken it into Banfield to get treated.
If you asked the name of the adoption agency that rents that space and got their number (they should have had some kind of paperwork or flyers near the cage area) you could have called them. I don't know if you did or not, but I know I have a VERY BIG MOUTH when it comes to animals and I can't stand to see one suffer. I would've done something like that.
