All you have to do is upgrade from cinderblocks to glass blocks, and suddenly your constructions are pretty! Clear silicone sealer along the top and bottom sides of the blocks will help keep the shelves from slipping.

If you're really lucky and find some blocks made with an opening on one side, you can even run cord in from behind and light them from within -- the new LED Christmas lights are perfect, because they generate so little heat.

Sorry for taking a couple of days to reply. Well at first I didn't do so well. Mainly the fireplace takes up a lot of space and between that and the 2 registers placed in weird spots (actually where they're placed makes sense, in front of the 2 windows) screwed things up. The TV was positioned so that B could lay on the sofa (since he does anyways) and watch TV. The loveseat had to be stuffed in a corner sort of behind the fireplace, but you could still see the TV.

Anyway, the TV got moved into the corner (so only one seat on the loveseat will be able to clearly view it) and the sofa still can clearly see the TV (laying down or not) and the fireplace can be watched.

In short we have very different tastes in how things should be arranged.

We did talk about using the mantle, but one of these days we're going to invest in a flat screen TV and then use the mantel that way.

what is it about a man's brain that he must look directly at the TV rather than at an angle. at sporting events, movies or plays sometimes he has to sit along the sides but TV, a straight visual line.

And ever notice how they are deficient in the LOCATOR GENE? my spousal unit will open the refrigerator and shout, where's the grapefruit? duh like the fridge isn't THAT big.

good thing we love em.

oh and i forgot to add that i insisted on a TV armoire because I hate haaving that big grey monster staring at me when it's not on. My sofa is on an angle to we can stare at the fire or the TV. and he can sit ina way that gives him the straight line view his brain requires. the tv is to the left out of the picture frame.

The only thing I learned about furniture placement over our 30 years of marriage was to NOT re-arrange any furniture while your husband was out at work during the evening. The chances of him coming in late, not turning on any lights and falling over furniture that wasn't there when he left earlier in the evening can cause some marital "discord".
