Hi~ This is my first post but I plan to visit here often. I will more formally introduce myself soon but wanted some insight on this issue as I've never come across it before. I have a male 4 month old kitten (Blue DLH). He was in a litter of four and was with his mamma and siblings until he was 9-10 weeks old.

He has this "habit" of sexually stimulating himself orally...several times a day. I have another male that never did this to this extent. Is this something he will grow out of once he is neutered? Is this normal behavior for some kittens? Is it something I should be concerned about? I think I fret because it seems to be a very frequent occurance.

I have two other cats and they all play well and get along so I don't think it's about boredom.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I bet its because found something that feels good and he enjoys doing, and also that he was taken from his mother too early. When kittens are seperated from mom and siblings too early, they start up little behaviors such as this.

Do you mean he's trying to "nurse" on himself, or is he showing his "wee willie winkie" like they do after litter box visits and cleaning themselves? Since he's longhaired, he may just be grooming more. By the way...welcome to TCS!!

There's no place like home
I have seen orphaned kittens suckle from each other in this manner. I'm with Jen - he might have left his mother too early. 12 weeks is a better age to separate them from momma.

Perhaps find a stuffed animal to give him comfort right now? Snuggle Kitties are supposed to be very helpful. Here is a picture of one: http://www.snuggleme.com/cat_product...le_kitties.htm
And btw, Tania in this link is our resident orphaned kitten expert on TCS.

If he's nursing on himself, you really should try to divert his attention to something else soft...like Momofmany said. One of my girls is a nurser and even tho she prefers my daughters ear lobe to anything else, she will have a go on a fuzzy rug, a towel, or a furry pillow. She has been that way for eight years now, and we've had her since she was three weeks.

It's definitely not a "sexual" behavior...it's a comforting behavior. It probably won't stop, even after neuturing. You don't want him to keep doing this since it can cause swelling and possibly difficulty in urination in the long run, not to mention irritating sensitive skin!
It may take a while, but you should be able to divert his attention to a new "lovey."
Can't wait to see his picture!! I bet he's gorgeous!!
