I have 2 male neutered indoor kitties. 6 and 7 years old. We just got a 6 week old male kitten. We've been keeping him separated in a different room for the last couple of days.

Last night we brought the kitten out to "meet" the 2 residents. Max seemed OK with it. Sniffed the kitten and meowed at it when it got close, but didn't attack or anything.

Simon watched it, did a low, gutteral meow and hissed at it, but also didn't attack it or anything.

is that a good first meeting?

I'm getting a feliway diffuser and I'm going to try putting vanilla on all 3 the next time we get them together. Any other suggestions?

sounds like a great first meeting! remember that hissing, growling and fighting are all normal behaviors that will at some point have to happen to establish who is alpha cat in the house. As long as there is no bloodshed, they are fine. I ahve always found males to be better with other cats, its the females that are finicky and moody about others.

Yes, the hissing and growling are normal first behavior interactions, they are simply warning the kitten to keep his distance. I wouldn't say fighting is a normal introduction behavior, cats really don't like to fight. They have several vocal and physical behaviors, hissing, growling, arched body, purred fur, tail swatting, all are defensive signals to intimidate. Just keep an eye on meetings, try to encourage play and acceptance by playing with the kitten with a toy maybe the others may also like, with out causing jealousy or pouncing...........
