Hi,

Hope someone can offer advice. I've searched this site, but haven't found the answer I was looking for.

My kitten is 3 months old. I've noticed over the last few weeks that she has a slightly inflammed bottom, and she doesn't like to clean around down there. She eats normally, deficates and urinates normally (no crying). I've noticed the problem when she started to smell from her backside. I noted the colon was protuding outwards and that she hadn't cleaned around it. Now it looks like it's slightly swollen. As I've said, apart from that, she does what all other 3 month old kittens do, and she's currently running around the living room like a mad woman!

Thanks for any help or advice given

As I'm sure most will say, get her to the vet. That's your best (and only) option.

Thanks. I'm hoping someone who has experianced something similar can share that information here on the health forum before I take the kitten to the vet. Vets are quite expensive here.

How are her stools? Are they formed or is she having diarrhea? Are they hard? Both diarrhea and constipation can cause irritation in the anal area. Has the kitty been wormed? Parasites are another common cause of irritation. When Spot had diarrhea and his poor behind was really inflammed, my vet gave me a cream to put on the area and reduce the inflammation.

Hi,
I'm in the U.S., but it's not cheap taking the cats to a vet here either.

My Boo had a problem with diarrhea and a prolapsed anus because of it. I did take her to the vet and she gave me some Panalog Cream to apply to her bottom besides prescribing a very mild food to help clear up and avoid her problems. I also kept an eye on her and cleaned her bottom with unscented baby wipes if I saw she was getting a little messy back there.

If she has a prolapsed anus then you really want the vet to see her because getting it corrected now could save problems and expense of surgery to correct later. Also, she may need her anal glands expressed. That's something the vet can do easily enough.

At any rate, I understand you wanting to avoid the expense, but your little girl really should be seen by the vet for this issue. I hope it all gets sorted out relatively easily and with minimum cost to you. Be sure to see about some Panalog Cream or the equivalent to apply to soothe your fur baby.

Healthy vibes coming your way and hugs for you.

Cloud_shade and Tru, big thanks for your advice. Kitty was wormed yesterday and so far her bottom seems to be better looking (if I can say that
). It's returning to a 'normal' colour and tonight she's actually cleaned down there. Thanks for your info and advice! Have a nice weekend from me and Saoirse!

One of my feral kittens had this problem. although he was only about 2 months old when it occured. I think it was because of a. diarrhea, b. he didn't really seem to clean himself well, and c. worms...

At least, when I took him to the vet he got a fresh dose of wormer (round/hook) and this cleared up both a. and b.

Diarrhea could also be caused if you switch their diet quickly from one food to another.

HTH,
