Ok so I got some Vetropolycin for Cubby's eye infection. He's six weeks today and none of the other kittens seem to have gotten conjunctivitis like he has.

He's six weeks now. (and btw, if you follow my other posts you know how reliable vets are around here
... so I definitely wanted to ask you experts if what I was told is the right thing to do)

I was told to put a little on his inner lower eyelid three times a day until the infection clears.

I just put it on for the first time and it seemed like it was hurting him.

Does this sting???

I feel so awful, I just want him to get better!!! A friend whose kitten just had the SAME problem gave me some amoxicillin drops and advised I put a drop on his tongue once a day and it should help it clear up faster and more comfortably for him. Her cat responded well to both medicines, although I did take him to the vet to get the Vetropolycin.

Any others with experience with crusty runny eyes and this medicine???
Any advice or just let me know I'm doing it right would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

I think Vetro is the one that stings. I usually use Terramycin instead and it is fine. It is also uncomfortable as well.

What made you think it was hurting him?

I've used Vetropolycin successfully before, many times. So, I don't know what to think....

Oh my poor little angel. I hate doing that to him, it makes me cry more than him!!!

How fast does it tend to clear up? What do you think about adding a drop of the anti-biotic once a day???

He was squinting and making little weepy noises...it made me so sad. When he'd try to open his eyes he'd squint and shut them back up. Now he's running around like normal, but this was a half an hour ago and I think Mommy cat might have licked his eyes....as I caught her with him. Future lesson to confine him for a bit after his medicine.

what antibiotic do you have? Did the vet give it to you for him? The eye stuff might sting a bit, or he might just react funny to something goopy suddenly in his eye. He will be fine. It is for the better.

The drops I have are amoxidrop (amoxicilin).

They weren't given to me by the vet, but by a friend whose cat had the same problem and she advised this would help the infection clear up faster.

I know it sounds awful, but due to my recent experiences with vets in my area, I am more likely to trust those who've been through the same with their cats than the vet.

I didn't ask the vet, I just got the drops from her after I was talking about the Vetropolycin.

It couldn't hurt right?

if she is sneezing and snotty then she can be on antibiotics and eye ointment. Amoxi is the best one for kittens. You would have to figure out the mL dosage for them. I would think right around .3 - .5 mL is all they could get being so young. You have to follow through for the full 10 days of treatment too. If the bottle of amoxi is already in liquid form, therefore the power is already mixed with water and you now have a liquid, it only lasts about 15 days so if someone else mixed it and gave you what is left, it is probably expired.

If they just have runny eyes and the vet made no mention of antibiotics, I would hold off and just continue with the eye ointment. I am never quick to medicate, those things tend to clear up fairly quickley on their own.
