Points...what are they?

Hey ive been here for a long time and have never really paid attention to "points". I have no idea what they are, what you do with them and how you get them. Can anyone explain?

Also I noticed the other day, a newbie who had just registered had lots of points relative to how long they've been here.....odd.....
