For the last few weeks, I've been feeding a young cat that hang around my house. There is a collar on her so I thought just another outdoor cat who has a owner. But today I found that she just gave birth to a litter of three in my backyard. What should I do? Should I bring them inside to my house or just leave them there? Will they survive if I just leave them outside?

You should bring them inside. There are a lot of things outside, including the weather, that would quickly kill the kittens.

Bring them in. You can look for an owner later, just get them inside.

If you put them in a wire dog crate, pad the edges a little ways up so they don't fall through the bars. Expect mom to be worried. If you set her up in a room, chances are she'll try to move the babies. Set her up in a box with the babies, & see if she stays there.

Can you shut mom in with babies in a small room?

You might have to bottle feed them....can you contact a vet or shelter? Any pet stores locally open now?

ok, I manage to get the mother to stay w/ the baby outside but there is no way I can lure the mother in.

And is Sunday night here, no one answer the phone.

Can someone post there picture for me? I don't have account for picture site, let me know your email address and I will send it your way.

Can you handle the mother cat? Even if you wrap her up in a towel - its vital for the kittens and the mother to be inside or you will lose the kittens.

That is very cold weather for a kitten, even with the mom there.

If you can bring them in, keep them in a separate area, away from other famiy members. Water, kitten food and a litter box near the nestig box.

They seem to be very cold.. poor things

The mother might be as distressed as you are now... wrap her in a towel and prepare a box for her. If you need to shut the room's door to make sure they're all together, you can do so. Cats will not eat their babies like hamsters do to protect them, they have feline instincts and are quite more intelligent.

As its been said, it is vital you bring them in or else you will lose them.

Good luck

Cats will kill their kittens if the situation calls for it, if they feel threatened, if the kittens are ill or if there is a predator outside and the kitten won't stop crying. If you can't get her inside, then prepare a place for her and the kittens outside. Use an old wooden crate, place a tarp over the crate, stuff the crate with hay and then cover the crate halfway to create a half door. Put food and water near the crate not in it to lure the mom inside. The collar looks like a flea collar? If it is, can you remove it? It isn't safe. Try and make her outside home as natural as possible keeping in mind that it has to be roomy enough for her to move around safely and the kittens have to be kept warm.

www.kitten-rescue.com will help you figure out what to do, should she abandon them. If you tell me what city you live in, perhaps one of my network rescue buddies can help you out. I can't promise, but I will promise to try and find you some help.

YOu must not separate them from their mother. To survive, they must be with their mother to get milk and warmth and protection. Lure her in with food -- tuna cat food or other aromatic cat food -- and confine them together. The other posters have given you lots of excellent advice and I hope you will PM the one who asked you to give your contact information -- she will help save these precious lives. GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!and may you receive many blessings for your caring concern.

I am in Toronto Canada.

One more question, is it a very bad idea to bring just the kitten in?

edit: I guess I got the answer above.

Well unless you are skilled in taking care of newborn kittens it won't do any good to just bring in the kittens.

I'd bring all of them in by whatever means necessary, and put them in a bathroom with a box and keep everyone there.
