I was woken up at 5AM this morning by the sound of a thundering noise coming out of our sun room, where the hot tub sits (it came with the house, we didn't buy it). We just took it apart to refinish the wood frame and repair some water lines and filled it up with water on Thursday night. We left the cover off while the varnish was curing. And yes, we had the long debate on whether or not the cats could accidentally land in it and decided that it would be OK. The temp was about 84 degrees so if one of them happened to land in it, it wouldn't harm them.

I traced the path of wet carpet from the hot tub to under my bed, where poor little Oscar was hiding and trying to dry himself. He finally came out of hiding a few minutes ago, dry, but a bit shaken. He's fine, but he obviously scared himself badly. This is just a warning not to leave water standing open in your homes, whether it be a sink, bath tub, or hot tub. You never know what they will fall into.

My poor little Oscar! I'm a bad meowmy today!

Poor baby. You know the minute you decide that they won't do something, they will do it (kind of a Karmic challenge).

I can just imagine -- he must have been running full-out and screeched to a halt in mid-air when he realized he was over the water, like Wile E. Coyote...

I think this serves us right: We turned on the pump and in 5 minutes it quit working so its in the repair shop. Had to drain the tub to remove the pump. So now we are back to an open but empty tub! Next time we fill it - the cover goes on immediately!
