So I ran into a local convenience store today to pick up a few things.

The lady ahead of me in line knew the cashier pretty well and they were talking. When she left, he started to tell me this odd story. He claimed that how he knew this woman was because he use to figure skate with her daughter. He told me that they were World Champions for two years and after that he told the daughter that he had to quit. It was costing his parents $76K a year and costing her parents more since she not only danced, but did the solo thing.

He continued saying the daughter is now training 2 of the top figure skaters in the world and is paid $300 per one hour lesson.

All I could think was "If you were a World Champion TWICE...why are you working at my local convenience store?!"

Maybe there really isn't money in figure skating...

Yeah, right! In his dreams! He was probably just "wishing" he had skated with her daughter!

I would also think that each level has a "world champion" attached to it. Different levels compete against one another, so I wouldn't think that if he was a skater that he was up in the "pro" ranks like Elvis Stoyko or Kurt Browning. He could have been a beginner and beat out all of the other beginners for the title of "world champion" in that division?

Anyway, sounds like there might be some measure of truth but grossly embelished.

There are several levels for skaters - you usually only see the elite on TV.

Ahhh, Elvis is so great. I love his style.

And I'll bet you Canadians (at least) know my all-time favorite skater: Robin Cousins! He has such a sense of humor in his skating, and such an elegant line... and oh man, those full-layout-position backflips!

Remember his routine to Brian Setzer's "Stray Cat Strut?"
FANTASTIC!

P.S. -- the guy may have been telling the truth. Maybe they were world champions in the under-12 category, something those of us not directly involved in the sport ever hear about...

No I didn't catch his name.

He looked like he was 60s...maybe closer to 70.

I didn't realize that. I just always doubt people when they use terms like "World Champions" and work someplace you wouldn't think they wound up.
