I received an email from the ASPCA alerting me of a bill in the Wisconsin state senate.
SB 162—Includes Animals in Definition of Domestic Abuse
Sponsor(s): Senators Fred Risser, Tim Carpenter and Julie Lassa
ASPCA Position: Support
Action Needed: Contact your state senator to request support for SB 162
SB 162 expands the definition of domestic abuse to include the harm or threat of harm to the animals owned by the petitioner, the respondent, either of their children, or household members. Pets are often used as pawns in domestic violence disputes. Without provisions to adequately protect their pets, victims of interpersonal violence may feel compelled to remain in abusive situations.
There is a form letter than you can personalize and send to your state senator-no need to look that person up-it will be filled in.
If you go to the aspca's website and click on the lobby for animals it should bring up this info, if not pm your email address and I can forward my email from them on to you.
As someone who lost a very special cat to an animal abuser almost three yrs ago I take special interest in this type of legislation.
Thanks.
