Zorro went in for his ex-rays regarding his mysterious infected toe last week. I had been so worried that it was going to be a severe bone infection or bone cancer, but to the vets surprise, it turned out that the bones arn't infected at all. (He's had this infection since february) He said its very odd that the bones are all perfectly fine, but he has no idea what could be causing the infection. Antibiotics don't seem to be working very well. They popped a few abcesses when he was under but it hasn't really helped any. The vet now thinks a foreign object might be stuck somewhere inside the socket of the nail, but since its so infected, he can't do surgery, and the infection won't go down.
He's put him on antibiotics (orbax) for another two months, and is hoping that it might get the infection down somewhat. This will be the third antibiotics we've tried. He's been on clavamox for months, as well as amox for a few months.
Although the orbax seems to be making him lose weight, he's now getting rather skinny and isn't really eating.
The vet is completely stumped and wants to send him to the teaching hospital in PEI. Its supposed to be one of the best places in Canada, but its a 6 hour drive and is very expensive. I hope it doesn't come to that since I don't have alot of money, and I've spend thousands on him already this year (he's needed dental surgery, three ex-rays, a doppler, numberous medication, not to mention his vaccinations and tons of vet checks).
Its a good thing it wasnt' cancer, but we still have no idea what is going on.

A second opinion always helps. More eyes on the subject and heads together may get to the bottom of it. Just take things in stride, first things first. Deal with the infection then move on to his teeth later. All the antibiotics he has been on will keep gum infection at bay right now.
