Best for my cat and kittens?

Okay, so as many of you already no, Ziggy had kittens on 17th August, which makes them 3 weeks last Friday.

As they grow, I want to do the best for them. My first question is their food.

I currently feed Ziggy Felix (wet) and Go-Cat (dry) as I heard that Purina foods are better for cats. (Kitten versions as Ziggy is not yet a year old!!) I've also noticed that Go-Cat seems to have smaller bits which may make it easier for the kittens when they are weaning. I won't be weaning them on wet food. What do you suggest? (I'm from the UK)

My other question is litter. I've never read much about litters that I've seen about. I currently using CatSan as it works really well, but how safe is it compared to other litters? Also, would the kittens prefer something softer as CatSan is like little pebbles?

Please advise me in the best way I can care for my kittens. I want the best for them and need to let their new owners know what I will be using so they can buy the same to start with.

I would not use any clumping litter around the kittens. Perhaps either a non clumping clay....or else use something natural(do you have Swheat there?).

I am not familiar with ingredients on the foods....well, I know of Go-Cat in the US & I say feed Go-Cat dry not purina(purina isn't a very good food). Hopefully, some UK members will be along who can be more helpful with food!

CatSan is a non clumping litter, but very hard little round pebbles. (Guess it could be clay based)

Go-Cat is made by Purina, and so is Felix. (www.purina.co.uk)

See? That's why I'm hoping some UK people show up soon! I didn't see ingredient lists on the UK purina website, so I cannot really offer too much advice... I do know that foods are very different in the UK vs. what you can get in the US!

Hi My kittens are a bit older but I am also feeding felix kitten (wet) and a mix of iams and hills kitten (dry). I will introduce other brands as well so that they don't get fussy. The vet said that this was good.

As goes cat litter our littlest (9 weeks) HAS been trying to eat it and play in it so I am in the process of trying to get a new litter which is safer on her tum and is biodegradable!! I have seen swheatscoop for sale online in the uk, but not at pet shops. I have tried the wood pellet type but it wasn't for me, I was thinking of trying the worlds best cat litter next?

I have had cats before but not kittens for years so i'd be interested in other views from UK peeps too!

It's really strange because IAMS is supposed to be really good for cats but it gives Ziggy runny poos!!

I tried the wood pellet stuff when I first got Ziggy but it stank the house out. So I went to non-clumping CatSan and have been using it for 9 months. (It's 'pretty' too, pure white and just goes grey when theres wee on it.) I didn't think of the Kittens wanting to eat it so thanks for that!!

I'm going to look up that Swheat Scoop because lots of people from the US on here have suggested it in other threads.

Hmmm... I'm surprised that you say it's common. I'd think that James Wellbeloved is a specialised brand in the UK, i've only ever come across it online. Its not a brand i've seen in vets or supermarkets and i'm not sure if a new kitten owner would be able to purchase it easily (something to consider ).

Could you explain why this is a good brand please? Or point me to the links? Thanks

It is common and can be bought from one of the many Pets at Home stores If you google it it tells you all about the product.

Go Cat is similar to Whiskas if not worse for containing animal parts. Purina One is good, as well as James Wellbeloved.

Catsan litter is good because i use that or Sainsburys ultra clumping litter which is just like Catsan.

The grains are tiny which makes it feel softer.

Being in the US I am not great with UK brands... but just like in the US if you buy it in the grocery store it likely is full of by products of meats ...

RE: Sainsburys clumping, that is what we use currently and I agree yes its great for the bigger cats, but I am very concerned as I said before about our kitten eating it!!! I have read lots of posts about the dangers of kittens eating clumping litter and i'm worried as when she jumped into the big cats tray she started playing with it. We had to use the pellet type when we got her as that's what the breeder used but it does nothing to mask odours and I would like an alternative thats safe in case she eats it?

If you can get World's Best Cat Litter in Britain, I would highly recommend it.

I bought some for the shelter where I volunteer for use with just the young kittens (couldn't afford to buy for the whole shelter ). I was concerned with the wee ones using clay litter as I've heard horror stories that if they eat it clumps can form in their tummies and cause the need for surgery or even death.

World's Best is corn based and although it is clumping litter, it is safe for the little ones.

The shelter said they couldn't believe how much the WBCL cut down on the litter pan odour in the kittens' rooms.

I've found it to be less smelly here at home as well.

As for food, I'll leave that to the UK folks to help you.

Great comments everyone thanks!! I'll use the CatSan until I notice any kitties eating it.

As for James wellbeloved is what I used for Ziggy when I first got her, but I got is from a 'cheap' store so didn't think it was very good as it wasn't in my supermarket, but I have seen it in Pets at Home come to think of it so I'll buy some in bulk if they get on with a small bag.
