I live in Myrtle Beach South Carolina , Yesterday I came hope from a Fishing trip in Georgia and while i was bringing things from my car into my house a fat grey cat with kind of long hair was rubbing against my leg , At first i almost kicked it ( got scared ) though it was a huge squirel for a split second , It wouldnt stop rubbing against me , None of my neightbors have cats .. This morning i asked the entire area who has cats , I know nothing about cats , I dont want this cat .
I dont hate cats ! but i dont like them either please dont be offended i just came here for advice i dont have anything to do with this forum .
I let it in my house for the night but i left it in the back porch because my back porch has a screen where it cant run away , it has no caler or collor (around the neck i cant spell) a long tail its all grey and its almost always stetching its body .
Should i just release it back outside ???????
What do they eat ?????
I gave her cottage cheese and water , I have no clue .... I know some of you are thinking im a retard , I just dont know what to do with her/him , Your advice is Urgent .

I can be reached here , I will keep on Checking .

The last thing im going to do is turn it into the city , They put them to sleep i would rather see the city sleep than this cat sleep , Ohhhh and lets not mention my daughter woke up extra early today to see the cat .
Im not into cats and dont have any pets .Please respond with advice

I'm glad that you decided to feed it. Can you just pick up a few cans of wet food and give it some water until you find a solution? It's a cat that is used to people by the behavior you are describing and likes you whether you like the cat or not
Call a vet in the morning and ask if there are any cat rescue places and talk to them. Cats can be microchipped now and they might just need to be scanned to find the owner but I don't think it's all that common. Maybe your local paper can place and advertisement for a lost cat? Do you have a digital camera that you can take a photo and print out flyer to post up around the neighborhood? Call the local humane society and report that you have found this cat and maybe even send them an email with the photo.

Here is the quandry...cats can and do get lost that aren't from your immediate neighborhood. What you "should" do is take it to a vet to have it scanned for a microchip and also determine whether it is spayed/neutered. If the cat is not spayed/neutered, then I would urge you to have it spayed/neutered BEFORE any decision is made regarding next steps. If the cat is very friendly, ask your vet if they could place it or know someone who could put it up for adoption. I don't agree with returning it back outdoors.

I called they will be open at 1pm today , But what if they put them to sleep ?
I mean i hear all these stories of animals that cant find a good home getting put to sleep .
I need to get rid of her/him as soon as i can , My daughter is falling in love with it and i dont want it in the house .
I dont want them to take this cat without me knowing where its going , It doesnt have a scan chip or whatever that was you are refering to .
As for the cat itself i just open the door and it rubs its sides against my foot turns around and does the other side , Could it be deaf ? Its showing me alot of signs that it is deaf , is this possible ?
Another thing is it didnt touch the cottage cheese , Is there anything eles i should try besides catfood im at work now and cannot go back home , I have a packed fridge , I can have a nighbor heat some rice or Chicken , Maybe Yogurt , Icecream ..... My neighbor has the key to my house just incase im ever stuck or an emergency i can have her go in and give the cat whatever is needed .
I posted 3 flyers on trees around my area .
Could this cat have a disease ? It looks very clean and doesnt smell . Please respond quick.

call your local vets and shelters asking if anyone has reported a missing cat, and also check your local paper. Try feeding it canned tuna or chicken or something like that.
And yes animal shelters do put cats down often, older cats have a much lower chance of finding a home.
Cats rub on you, thats how they show their love. See if its ears pop up or twitch or anything when you say something to it.
Now coming from your daughters view, is there anyway you could keep it, even just on the back porch until you find it a new home. I would give it a few days to see if anyone reports it missing and keep calling and checking with shelters and vets and checking the paper. And if you dont hear anything start thinking about rehoming it. Maybe post an add in the paper but make sure to talk to the people before just letting it go. And if it does come to that please get it fixed before giving it away!
Hope this helped a bit!

Hello, I tried the chat page on your site there but it didn't work.

First of all the cat sounds like it's very friendly and sweet. Rubbing against your legs is part of how cats behave when they like you. Basically they have scent glands on their faces and 'mark' you as theirs by rubbing against you. We can't smell it at all though so it's just nice.

Cats are carnivores and a lot of them get diarrhea from milk products so give it chicken or tune or ham if you have any around if you can't give it proper cat food.

You could keep the cat on your porch for good while without a problem. If you do though, get a litterbox and some litter so it can poo and pee.

Cats usually don't smell that we notice so your cat not smelling is a good sign.

It would be great if you could get some proper cat food and a litterbox etc. and keep the cat on your porch while you're figuring more about what to do. It sounds very friendly.

Are there any no kill shelters around? Could you put up a notice at the vets etc. so that you spread around info that the cat is up for adoption but care for it yourself while it's waiting to find its forever home? That's the only way for you to really know where the cat will end up staying and making sure it won't get put to sleep. A no kill shelter does that too though.

Anyway keep us updated and good luck!

Everyone has given you some good advice. Have you set up some sort of litter box for it to toilet in. Cats are carnivores & eat meat.

Awww.... That was so nice of you to care for the little kitty until you found its owner. (even though your not much of a cat person)

I just wanted to say that I wish more people who weren't cat lovers would have the heart you did to put forth the effort to find its home...
