I never had a problem with Ping doing this but Pong does it all the time it seems. Every time I put food in bowl Pong must dump 1/2 of it on the floor. Why why why does she do this and is there a way I can teach her not to do this.

Yeah I am starting to get that feeling that it won't go away. I can't tell you how many times I hav egonei n there and found food all over the kitchen, bowls strung everywhere, and their pet food mat pulled to the other side of the kitchen. I tell ya its just like having a toddler in the house again.

Me I am doing ok. Found out Pong is a girl and not a boy.

Ping/Pong - two of Ling's brothers (who were adopted together cause of it) were named Ping and Pong. The sisters were Ying and Yang

Anyway - try feeding Pong on a flat paper plate and see if she still does it.

And the pulling of the mat..........for the longest time we had a towel under the feeding bowls/water bowl of Keno's with no problems. Now Charlie decides he doesn't like it there any more and will pull out the towel and spill the water all over the floor - then look at you!

So now the bowls are in a cookie sheet to keep any spills from getting on the floor. Can't even put a towel IN the cookie sheet without him pulling it out.

Barkley does this exact same thing, with the food in his bowl as well as Petunia's. What I have noticed is that if I put only a little bit of food in his bowl he wont do this but if I fill it up some because Im leaving the house for awhile he will stick his paw in the bowl and scoop out atleast half of the contents, it infuriates me sometimes because I know he wont eat it once he does this but rather kick it around the floor and turn it into a toy, leaving me to clean up the mess. Im not sure if this is a habit that can be broken but if so I sure would like to know the secret. Good luck with Pong!

Sonic drives me nuts with this, he'll grab a HUGE mouthful of shredded chicken out of the bowl and take it a few paces away leaving a trail of food behind him and then he'll dump it on the carpet and eat off the carpet.

I think he thinks he's stealing it from Radar when he does that, but it actually allows Radar a bit more time to finish his own dinner before Sonic noses him out of the bowl.

Another suggestion - since it seems like "competition" - try feeding one cat in one room and the other in another room and don't let them bother each other - might solve the problem.

I don't think its competition because he will be in there by herself and do this. And she does it just like B&J says sticks a paw in and scoops food out then eats.

Walter prefers to pull food out, to eat. And he is fed up on the counter, alone.

I think in his case it has to do with his short muzzle and the bowl shape. Is her bowl deep? Walt does better with a shallow bowl with open sides.

I also think cats in the wild do this instinctively -- you pull your portion away from the carcass, so your mates can get in and pull their part off and away. Or maybe I watch too much Nature?
