Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the vibes. Sophie is still at the vet's office (they're holding her overnight). The vet is supposed to call my mom back in the morning when they decide which tests/etc to run on her. She called them before they closed and mentioned the pine cage thing to him and he said that definitely could be a factor- but that he also thought due to the extent of her issues that this is also a hormonal/genetic thing as well so to be safe rather than sorry- we're going to let them run some blood pannels/tests on her. I'm also planning to bring her old cage back to my mom's house this week for when Sophie gets to come home and to take the new one out just to see if it helps.

Ok guys- just an update. The vet called my mom a little while ago so she just called me to let me know what he said. He does not think that the cage is causing Sophie's problems- BUT he is not ruling it out yet.

What him (and the other vet he consulted) are concerned about is how Sophie is just drooling excessively. (it's really bad). It has caused her to loose all of the hair on her chin and have a big red bald spot on her chin that looks just horrible. He thinks that she may be allergic to both timothy hay (a huge part of her daily diet) and that it could also be something that is in her saliva. He believes part of this is bad genetics causing her to have the allergy/saliva issues. He thinks the timothy hay may be causing her eyes to be runny- so we're going to try using the timothy hay cubes instead as they have much less hay dust.

Today he's going to sedate her and get a good look in her mouth to see if he can confirm his theory on the saliva or see if it's something else. Her teeth are in good shape-they're not too long/etc so he doesn't think it's that. While she's sedated, he's also going to do a blood pannel/ allergy tests on her and send it off to a lab if needed. The vet says Sophie is still not out of the woods yet because she is very ill- so we're still hoping that she rebouds just fine and makes it through all of this. We are also going to stop using her regluar natural pine shavings and switch to newspaper ones and see if that helps at all. He said if we still don't see improvements after doing that- to then switch cages. (he doesn't want us to switch her back to her smaller older cage for now as he doesn't want to stress her out any).

Sophie will be spending yet another night at the vet's office. My poor girl
Hopefully though they will be able to give us an idea of exactly what's going on though. Her vet is very good and he loves little Sophie to pieces. She's gone to him since the day I adopted her so i know she's in good hands there.

Nikki, I'm sending lots and lots of get well vibes for little Sophie! (Tailer is, too
...he loves bunnies!)

My first thought on reading this was also a possible reaction to the pine. I used to be a volunteer educator for the House Rabbit Society and I know that the fumes from pine shavings can cause liver problems. I've also known some rabbits who had allergic reactions to it. (FYI, here's an article from HRS on the pine issue: http://www.rabbit.org/care/shavings.html.)

Hopefully, the steps you've taken will help your poor baby feel better soon!!

Ok my mom just called. The vet sedated Sophie and said that when he got into her mouth to check out her gums/etc....her bite is off. The vet is doing a bite correction on all of her teeth. He is doing part of it today and part of it tomorrow so that she is not under anestesia for a prolonged period of time. The way that her teeth are off is causing her to drool excessively (and as a result she's lost a lot of fur on her chin/etc) He says that should hopefully fix part of the problem. The other likely cause for her weepy eyes/etc he said is definitely allergies. So hopefully once we get the shavings/cages changed out that should really help too.

I hope so. She looked sooo pitiful the last time i saw her
She's just felt miserable lately. I really hope this makes her feel a lot better. She's just not been herself. My mom said she hadn't been playing with her toys much lately at all eithor (she LOVES her toys too so that's odd)

I just hope all of this medical work gets her back to her normal self soon. I tell ya'll one thing though- this is one expensive bunny lol. I don't even wanna know what this total vet bill is going to wind up being
IT's worth it though- whatever make my little floppy ear girl feel better.

Just and update:

Sophie was able to go back home with my mom this afternoon. The vet filed down and straightened her teeth up- so that should help with her drooling/going bald on her chin issues. My mom also got her some special litter that doesn't contain any pine/etc in it at the vet's suggestion so we're going to try that and see if it helps. The vet said to give it a few days and see if she improves- she is due back in two weeks for another check up. Hopefully she will be much improved by then
She did really well given how crummy she felt. I am just glad she's ok and it's hopefully just a few minor things that can be easily resolved!
