I'm kind of scared to go back to school.

On Saturday, a student at my university was sexually assaulted and the guy is still at large. I know the campus is doing their best to keep us all safe but still, I'm quite freaked out and I don't want this to happen again. The girl has been badly injured in the attack with a broken jaw among other things. And with students (including myself) going back this week security is being tripled and everything. I hope she will recover. I don't know her personally but when something this terrible happens everyone at the university feels it. Please keep her in your prayers while she recovers.

And also that the suspect will get caught .... What he did to her is inexcusable

I'm not saying that I feel unsafe going back to school, just a little more uneasy than usual. In general I've always felt safe there, even in some of the darker, more secluded spots on campus. So I'll stick to the light, airy, outside spaces until everything's okay. I could navigate the place with a blindfold on. But still it gives me the creeps.

Oh no that is scary! There are ways to keep yourself safe though! First of all, try not to be alone! I take some night classes and when I walk to my car I have my phone in one hand and my keys in the other, that way if someone does attack me I can put my key in their eye!It sounds silly but it makes me feel safer. Also, until the guy is caught wear comfy shoes, because if some creepy criminal approaches you, the best way to protect yourself is to run!!

Oh wow...what a horrible thing. You are right, there is no excuse for something so horrible. I hope he gets caught and gets the punishment he deserves!

Universities can be dangerous places at any time. I live in a University town and I have been warned (almost too much) to be wary of being alone, especially at night.
But, it's just something you have to deal with...here are some to help you feel safe going back to school. Try to stay in large crowds (not usually hard during class time
) and keep an eye out. If you Really feel uneasy, maybe look into getting some mace or something?? I wish you the best in your classes!

Get one of the small cans of mace that you can put on your key chain, and always always always be in at least pairs if not trios!
Good luck!
Hope that
gets caught!

I remember way back when I was in college and there was an assault the college provided an escort service so one didn't have to walk on campus alone.

How is security for the classrooms??

Also: wherever you walk, walk crisply and with confidence: head up, shoulders back, eyes always moving. Spin once in awhile to see what's going on behind you. Let everything about you show that you are alert and ready -- that you are nobody's victim!

Over the river and through the woods...
Everyone has given great advice, but keep in mind that these things don't only happen on campuses. Actually, you are probably safer on campus right now because of the added security than at the mall or in the park. ANY dark place is dangerous, so precautions need to me made where ever you are.

Besides the pepper spray and buddy system, you may also would look into taking a simple self dense course to teach you what you can do if someone does get to close.

You're classmate is in my prayers. Let us know how she is doing.
