Calling all hairdressers!!

Or whomever can help me, I need to know how to clean my hair straightener. Its got a build up of what I guess is hair product, and will probably need to be scrubbed, but I'm afraid that might ruin it. Granted, it wasn't expensive, but I am cheap and would like to maintain it instead of having to buy another one.

Here's a link with some suggestions for cleaning curling irons. I would guess straighteners would be about the same. When I was in high school, I worked as a shampoo girl at a local hair salon and we would soak the barrels in a water/alcohol mixture, then scrub them off, but that was over 20 yrs ago.

I used an sos pad when I cleaned mine.. just very lightly scrubbed off the buildup, but you may ruin the surface if you press too hard.

I'd try using rubbing alcohol, or a "clarifying" shampoo .. I think Suave makes a clarifying shampoo. Fairly inexpensive but it breaks down the hair products.

Ammonia works really well. Got any window cleaner?? A squirt ot two and let it soak a few seconds works on my curling iron.
