I bought a couple of those cat scratchers from Wal Mart. I bought the small one first to see if my cats would even like it. They loved it. So I eventually bought the larger one. I didn't really care for the way they looked just sitting on the floor. So I decided to make some holders for them using some of my pieces of Santos Mahogany that I had left over from building my own kitchen countertops. I also used this same wood on the crow's nest of the cat tree I built. That can be seen here....

I put some rubber feet on the bottom of them to keep the wood from scratching the floor. This wood is very dense and very heavy. Instead of putting polyurethane on it, I just put on 2 coats on Johnson's paste wax and buffed it. I decided to use Ansel as my model for this photo shoot. Sorry some of the pics are blurry...he wouldn't keep still with the catnip sprinkled on it. I think this looks much better sitting on the floor than just a cardboard box. What do ya'll think?!

Great idea! You might just have something there to sell...
I have George's kind of hiding behind the kitchen table so it's not such an eye sore.

My George loves his - not so much to scratch tho - that's where he goes to lay down and chill out. And he knows that if he's getting a pinch of cat nip he runs over to the box eyes wide open just waiting for me to get over there.

Wow this looks great!!! Also, I looked at the pics of the cat tree on the other thred and...all I can say is WOW! You did such a great job! It kind of inspired me to make my own cat tree for Ike. They are just so expensive and I am a poor college student! But now that I kind of have a tutorial, I think it may be a fun/cheap alternative to spending a fortune!
Thanks for the inspiration!!! If/when I get mine set up, I'll post pictures!

I think your scratcher holder is neat, and I would like to offer a suggestion.  I would very much like to find a holder that could be mounted on a door.  As I see it, the holder would be a simple frame (such as yours is) but would 1) have overlapping straps at the bottom and at the top to hold the scratcher in place; and 2) would be open at the top end so that replacement scratchers could slide in and out. The holder would have horizontal bars on its back, so that it could be mounted on a door with two-sided tape.   Wood strips (quarter-inch-thick, by two inches or so wide), or plastic strips of that size, would make the frame lighter.  Further, as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like to have one of the regular size scratcher and one of the "double-wide" size.
