Unfortunately I'm not. The design process for software is really screwed up and security is the last thing on anyone's mind, either open source or privitized software. When you think about it, Linux is open source, meaning anyone can have access to the basic code. Even though Ubuntu is manufactured (or not open sourced) it's still based on the same code that is published on the Linux Project.

The only reason why Windows receives so many more viruses is because windows is the dominate OS. If Macs take over the OS Market, then the same people writing scripts to destroy windows machines will start to write the scripts to destroy the Macs.

Take the iPhone for example. That was hacked into before it ever reached the hands of the users...but that was still placed on the shelves. Software in general is placed in the market because of deadlines, rather than because they're secure. It's all about profit!

The good news is that lawyers are on capitol hill trying to get laws passed to make common practises of software writing turned into laws.

I'm to understand that is actually the designers that also build bugs, then bug fix-its to make more $$. It is definitely said that Gates, has his programmers design flaws, bugs, viruses and spyware or whatever you choose to call it, so then they can build the anti-whatever programs to sell and make a bigger profit.

However having said all that, I seldomly have virus or spyware issue's anymore, because I liase (sp?) with a technician every so often and he tells me what to look out for etc, and has been steering me away from microsoft and thus far I have to say, it is working. Ubuntu is the final step, to be 100% microsoft free.

Well so far I have only sampled it because it wants me to re-partition my drive and I believe even format it again. From what I did see and do without actually installing it, all I can say is "WOW".

Well I must say, Ubuntu is clearly not for me.
I've PM'd 2 members here, but my situation is somewhat odd. Of course one PM was to SarahP and after todays tragic event, I do not want her to worry about my problem. (Inbox full, thats why I'm writing it here).

I spent countless hours today at the Ubuntu site and finally managed to get some info which was somewhat helpful. I need to shrink my partition in order to dual boot both Windows XP and Ubuntu but, my partition does not want to be shrunk
.

So I guess I am stuck with crappy old Windows. I wish I hadn't heard of Ubuntu coz it does seem so much better. Oh well some you win others.......

the old pc we set it up on only has Ubuntu on it. We didn't do a dual boot, because the old pc is too small and slow to run windows xp.

Years ago I tried to install Red Hat Linux to do a dual boot and it was an abject failure.

I would suggest doing it as a stand alone OS if possible.
It runs beautifully for us that way.

I was thinking about that but came across a poll. Apparently majority of users 50 some odd percent use it as a dual boot, only 28ish percent use it stand alone. Plus I haven't got enough disk space on my spare HD or dvds or flash drives to back everything up that I need
I have got 1/3 of it done though incase something on the install gives out.

Bummer.
We've never had trouble with the backup thing...our place looks like a computer graveyard most of the time. PC parts everywhere.
Combined with my hubby's love of buying the biggest hard drive he can. And upgrading hard drives. It's like a collection for him.
And he's even cleaned out on some of the spare parts!
He just got a new dvd drive (it matches the tower better), and still wants some other one that's even better.

Oh well, I'm rambling now....

We never looked at polls before installing Ubuntu, we just heard from our nerd friends that Ubuntu rocked. And it does. We actually had a spare pc to install as a stand alone to see if we even liked it. The spare pc is super old and slow, but you wouldn't know it with Ubuntu running. The big computer is Mike's gaming machine, and it shall not be messed with.

There are also supposed to be windows emulators for running windows programs on linux.

I finally got it sussed, just a small glitch with the installation which is now fixed. I like doing things the hard way.
Now I just gotta get thunderbird over here and real player and I will be sussed.

Yea I want the biggest and best computer everything too. I upgraded my Laptop hardware after having it just 1 year, and its been another year since,
What makes it so hard for me is, those things here are so cheap, alot cheaper in China mind you.

First I will use just one word to sell this to others. F-A-S-T.

I cannot believe the sheer speed of this OS. I mean over on Winblows I have got so much software and crap that I have added over time its not funny. Thus far I miss 2 things from Winblows. Any number of my media players that plays WMA and DRM music and I-Tunes. unfortunately my stinking I-pod won't charge unless I-Tunes is opened.

It is so much more user friendly oh and the best part. Its totally free.
