How often should kitten be using the litter box?

I just adopted a 5 month old kitten from a rescue. He seems well adjusted to being around me and in my room (he's very outgoing). But he's been here for almost 10 hrs now and hasn't gone potty. He has plain clay litter in his box (what they told me to use), but he hasn't used it and every time I put him in it he jumps out like he hates it.

But he hasn't had any accidents yet either.

Is he just nervous and will go tonight? Or should I start worrying that something is wrong?

Don't worry yet - 24 hours should be the benchmark. He's probably too excited being in his forever home

Is the kitten eating and drinking?

Ok thanks, good to know - 10 hrs seemed like a long time but I thought maybe he was just scared.

He finally peed, but not in the litter box. He jumped into my trashcan and while me and the bf were gooing and gaaing over it and taking pictures he was peeing....

I moved the litter box out into my bedroom (before it was next to my toilet in the bathroom, I dumped out all the weird litter (had a layer of feline pine under normal clay litter) and removed the top piece which is curved to prevent him dumping his litter everywhere - we'll see if that helps and then I can ween him back into the bathroom.
