Hello,

not really new to the forums, have been lurking for months (does that sound creepy?) but am new to posting on them. I am living with my parents for one more week then am moving into a rented place for school. I have one 15 year old cat, Sugar, and last Sunday took in a stray, Kali. Unfortunately, I had to bring Kali to the humane society as I've paid over $300 in vet bills in the past month ($240 for finches and $80 for cat check up/grooming) and can't afford to get Kali spayed, get her tested for FIV/FLV and get shots (the vet I use charges $185 for spay and $85 for the FIV/FLV tests). I'm really hoping that as I gave in an application with Kali that I'll get her back, I can afford the adoption fee.

I do have some questions, but will post them in the appropriate forums. I look forward to chatting with you.

Welcome Julie

Sugar is beautiful, as well a Kali. I am sorry you are having to give her back. I hope you can find a way to keep her. Best of luck.

Hello & welcome to the forum. Your cats are gorgeous. I was in the same situation when my son brought home Blossom. She was only 3 weeks old & the vets were too busy to hand raise a kitten, so they told me to bring her back when she was 8 weeks old. Of course I couldn't part with her after having her for so long. It would have been cheaper too, to surrender her to the vets & adopt her back. I just couldn't take that chance. Now she's almost 1 y/o.

Hello, Welcome to TCS!
It is sad when we can't afford to keep every stray. Hopefully she will be a lucky one and get adopted.

Thanks for the welcomes.

I found Kali in my backyard on the Sunday before last. She was around 5.5 lbs so I took her in my home and she gained a pound over the next few days (you could sure feel the difference over her spine and hips). The following Thursday I took her into the humane society (with an application to adopt her) as I've paid a bit in vet bills recently and couldn't afford to take her to my vet with university beginning again just around the corner (I have the money, but I want to save as much as possible for the future, ie food, emergencies, etc).

When I called before I took her in the lady on the phone said she'd be adoptable in a few days and when I took her in the person behind the desk said a week. So I phoned today (four days later) and the lady said that there's a virus at the shelter and it's closed to the public for a couple of days.

I'll phone again in a few more days (if they haven't called back by then). Hopefully I'll get her back before school starts and she wont have any troubles with the virus going around in the shelter.

I called the humane society today and it turns out Kali's owners reclaimed her. Hopefully they'll have her spayed.

I may adopt another cat in the future but for now will use all of your advice with my senior and the two I'm moving in with.
