I'm agoraphobic, although not many in my life know about it.

SEVERELY agoraphobic, but I hide it very very well.

I have no idea what that means!

Why would you have a phobia of Al Gore???

Small joke not funny, I know. But seriously what is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia Definition

The term agoraphobia is translated from Greek as “fear of the marketplace.†Agoraphobia today describes severe and pervasive anxiety about being in situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing and/or from which help may not be available should a panic attack occur. This anxiety leads to the following behavior: 1) avoidance of these types of situations, i.e., being alone outside of the home, traveling in a car, bus, or airplane, being in a crowded area, or being on a bridge; 2) endurance of such situations under great stress, i.e., a panic attack may occur; or 3) requiring another personâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s company when in said situations. Agoraphobia typically accompanies a panic disorder although on rare occasions, it may also occur when criteria of a panic disorder are not fully met (Morrison, 1995). In panic disorder, panic attacks recur and the person develops an intense apprehension of having another attack. This fear—called anticipatory anxiety or fear of fear—can be present most of the time and seriously interfere with the person's life even when a panic attack is not in progress. In addition, the person may develop irrational fears called phobias, such as agoraphobia, about situations where a panic attack has occurred. If agoraphobia occurs with panic disorder, the onset is usually during the 20s, and women are affected more often than men.

Agoraphobia affects about a third of all people with panic disorder. Typically, people with agoraphobia restrict themselves to a "zone of safety" that may include only the home or the immediate neighborhood. Any movement beyond the edges of this zone creates mounting anxiety. As noted earlier, sometimes a person with agoraphobia is unable to leave home alone, but can travel if accompanied by a particular family member or friend. Even when they restrict themselves to "safe" situations, most people with agoraphobia continue to have panic attacks at least a few times a month.

People with agoraphobia can be seriously disabled by their condition. Some are unable to work, and they may need to rely heavily on other family members, who must do the shopping and run all the household errands, as well as accompany the affected person on rare excursions outside the "safety zone." People with this disorder may become house-bound for years, with resulting impairment of social and interpersonal relationships. Thus the person with agoraphobia typically leads a life of extreme dependency as well as great discomfort.
BTW, I love Al Gore!!!!!!

No, really, I do!!!!!

For me it's getting lost!

I went to Detroit not long after 9/11 and have only flown once before that many years ago. I wasn't afraid of flying, or the plane crashing or being blown up or anything. I was afraid of getting lost in the airports (the one here and Chicago O'Hare) enroute and that my luggage would get lost too because unlike me, for some reason it was flying direct!

The other one is monsters. Yes! Monsters! Years ago I tried playing an online game that involved killing monsters. I couldn't have been more stressed out, afraid and full of anxiety if those things were in the same room with me. In fact in game and out I acted as though they were in the same room with me. Needless to say I stopped playing that game

EDIT: I was going to add "water" but my fear is not "irrational" meaning no cause for it. It's based on a real experience of having drown when I was in grade 5. But I can go into water but not if it's deeper than waist high. Any higher and it's pushing it. And I can't put my face in water or have water splashed on my face be it from the tap, shower, rain... I go into panic and sputter mode. So it's a really great fear...but not an "irrational" one.

Ok, I have one more irrational fear. I wasn't going to mention it because it's really, really, stupid. I am terrified of throwing up. Believe it or not I've never done it yet and I'm 26. I have no clue why I should have this fear. It's so rediculous. If I get really nauseous or think I might puke I have a panic attack. I even freak out if someone pukes around me. Then I also have a fear of eating undercooked meat or spoiled food. I'm sure this paranoia stems from the fear of throwing up. I left a jar of jam out for a few hours the other day and my DH said it would still be good. The jar was even still cold. I still eat the jam but I was really wary. My food phobia just exasperates everyone cuz they get tired of hearing me ask "is this meat done?" or "is this still any good?" Then, "are you sure" blah blah. My mom says it's obsessive compulsive. I don't know about that but I hate being this way.

You're not alone, I'm the exact same way. I'm completely terrified of getting sick. I've had food poisoning twice and I think that's what started the whole thing. I'm the worst about thinking food is bad.

Another related fear of mine, is eating out or going places after I've eaten. I'm really not sure why I'm this way because a year ago I was the exact opposite. But now, I have to get my food to go and eat it when I get home (but then, I'm counting the minutes I have to eat it before it might go bad). And I can't leave the house until 3-4 hours after I've eaten ANYTHING (even if it's a cookie or something).

Heights....not afraid of flying...just afraid of feeling like I could "free-fall" with nothing around me...esp like being up high in a huge stadium (one time was enough for me! NEVER AGAIN!)
I used to be terrified to death of spiders, but with counseling found out the "why" and that seemed to greatly diminish the terror. (I still don`t like the big ones....but I can usually kill them now) Otherwise I like other "bugs".
This was a very intresting thread as I read though it.
I used to know a woman that was so terrified of dogs that when a kid tried to hand her a NEWBORN PUPPY she actually peed her pants and had a panic attack!
But I think the cotton ball phobia takes the cake! (Wonder what that`s all about??? Some medical person swabbing him at sometime during his childhood before doing a painful medical procedure???) Has to make you wonder, does`nt it?
I NEVER TEASE anyone though who is afraid of ANYTHING....It`s HORRIBLE to be terrified of something, easp when it`s something that others don`t understand (and often the person him or herself does`nt even understand)

What gets me though is there is no apparent reason for my fears of grasshoppers and throwing up. I have never had a tramatic experience with either.

I am terrified of tidal waves, I have had so many vivid dreams about them...since I was little and before I even knew what they were. I always think of them when I am going to bed, walking home from work or if i wake up to any strange noises in the morning or middle of the night. I seem to always be living by the ocean on top of it.
I have to tell you one cuz it still freaks me out, when I was younger I had this dream I was with my grandma by the ocean listening to the radio cuz we heard there may be a possibility of a tidal wave. I remember her saying well if it gets to the virgin islands, you know we won't make it. (I didn't even know there were virgin islands at the time when I had the dream, I looked it up after ward cuz the dream was so real), then the man on the radio who was in the virgin island...starts saying "oh s***, it's coming" and starts screaming then there was silence. I remember holding on to my grandma then we got on our knees and starting praying that god would take us quickly and we wouldn't feel and pain. Now my grandma & I, we believe in God, or something of the sort out there but are not religious by any means (spiritual I guess you could say). Now tell me that dream doesn't spook you out?

I am afraid of the dark, spiders, small spaces( unless there are windows or another way out) and dolls. I started being afraid of dolls when my cousin got a doll whose eyes were supposed to opened and close when you moved her, the problem was the dolls eyes would open and close no matter what, whether she was lying down or sitting up. Ever since then (She had it when I was about 7) I've been afraid of them.

I am afraid of falling so I am, of course, afraid of flying or going to the top of high skyscrapers and such. ForGET drivin thru mountain ranges. I have a normal aprehension of fire and tornadoes also.

NOTE: Being afraid of cotton balls really cracks me up.
