It is a two-way street. Not only do people responding to posts need to take others' feelings into consideration, but those CREATING threads need to consider the audience here, and consider all those who might be reading what they are posting.
Disclaimer: I am not taking this thread personally, although other's seem to have emotionally attached to it.
In my view, I see it this way: I came here, like most people, to discuss CATS. I joined the PL so that I would have a place where I could feel comfortable discussing things of a more personal nature with other PL members, as there are some things that are just NOT meant to be publicly broadcast. Especially those things that are of a more adult nature.
It is called HAVING DISCRETION.
Very few of my posts in the CL are about anything other than my cats - although I understand it is a relatively "open" forum section.
Call me cranky if you wish, but I am one of those that has been extremely bothered as late by the sheer volume of "my life sux" threads. I come here to GET AWAY from real life, to find others that I have CATS in common with.
I come here for smiles, for laughter, for education, for sharing information about cats, and to occasionally join into a fun debate in IMO.
I do not come here to get a daily digest of people's personal problems. I have more than enough in my own life. So the more and more negative the threads, and the more of them there are, the more cranky I get. Simply because negativity breeds negativity.
We are bathed in negativity on a daily basis - just turn on the news, or look at the internet. Bad things are everywhere.
Is it too much to ask that people think before posting something that is really negative in the CL? Can you instead post your dirty laundry on your MySpace or Facebook pages, or on your personal blogs, or in your diary instead of flooding TCS with posts of that nature?
Is TCS the ONLY venue you have for venting about your personal life? If it is, maybe professional help might be called for.
Yeah...repecting others. That includes the AUDIENCE.
