Ok, I've finally got some pictures that show Riley's color changes. When I first got him 2 months ago, he just had a little hint of silver/grey on his ruff and belly. Now it seems to be nearly all that color with a touch of brown on the tips, as you can see in the first two pictures.

The last 2 pictures show that he is solid black (brown?) all over the rest of his body.

What would you call this?

Riley is a black cat. The greyish can be from old hair or what they call "kitten coat" that will shed out. The brownish is probably from sitting in the sun - black cats tend to "rust" a little in the sun - kinda like bleaching the black hairs.

I've seen those changes in black persians.

He would only be a smoke if the hair at the base of his coat was white - not a greyish.

So he's still a black longhair cat

So they grey will eventually shed out and he'll be all black?

GK - you can see why I am trying so hard to get him used to a brush with all that fluff

Aww I kinda like the silver, especially his little silver britches on his back legs

When I first got him he only had a tiny bit of silver in his ruff and belly, but a lot of it has turned now. I'll let you know when he changes color again
