EXACTLY! When an animal's welfare is at stake, I wouldn't give a flip about courtesy and social graces, I'd just say whatever needs to be said. That woman needed an education on the spot, and if the shelter's policies didn't allow the worker to give her one, I'm afraid I would have.

I've had a few fairly intense talks (mostly about declawing) with people looking at cats in the shelter where I volunteer, and I'm just sure every time that the volunteer coordinator is going to refuse to let me volunteer anymore, but... ya gotta do what's right, y'know? Not just what's "policy."

Grrrrrr.

Oh, the stupid folk are out in force!

We've got purebred Shih Tzus here & people are trying to get them as breeder dogs!

The worker does need to stay corgial/polite/etc. It's their job to deal with this daily. Some people can be educated. Others become like the "Vancome Lady" on Mad TV and practically start saying "LALALALALA I can't hear you".
I speak from experience. There are lots of people who will not listen on the declaw issue. The shelter I worked at did not have a "do not declaw" clause, but we sure didn't recommend it. I came across plenty of people who said "we've always declawed, so we're going to". All a worker can do is try to talk them into an adult who has already been done.

All it takes is that same person having a bad experience. Then there is one more person out in the public bashing the shelter to everyone they know or come across. Shelters get enough bad press without being rude to potential adopters.

They should do mini psych evaluations on potential adopters. Seriously, there are way too many superficial people who merely get an animal for every reason but love. And don't get me started on hoarders and collectors who clearly own too many cats in the first place. (Sorry if I started to vent a bit, it's a pet peeve of mine.)

I'm so glad that the Last Chance Society did a welfare checkup call for our two kittens two months after we got them. It just goes to show that some people were going out of their way and heart to check up on the kitties.

Oh wait, you know those 'breathing and purring' curled up kittens and puppies(?) they sell at Cracker Barrel? My Dad calls them the perfect pet!

Some feline urgent rescue organizations require a screening process to adopt. I wish the shelters would do this too... it would weed out the meanies!!! Geez! I can tell you I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut! She sounds like a snobby freakin' b!

When I adopted Jake, people were walking past him saying "Oh, I wouldn't want him, he's limping." or "Do you think we could put up an electric shock fence for him?" Because his papers hangin up said "Knows how to open gates"

I immediatly wanted him!
I didn't care that he limped or would open the gate. His leg would heal, and he could be taught to not open it.

He's the sweetest thing in the world!

He no longer limps, and we fixed the gate to prevent him from opening it!

People are SOOOOOOOO stupid

They were stuffed toys curled up like they were sleeping and when you pet them they would start "breathing". Probably the same thing you're talking about Stacy!

When I'm working adoptions at my shelter and people like this come in, I get really angry, really fast. I try my best not to be flat out rude, and usually end up saying something like this:

"Well, judging from what you're telling me, I'm not sure a cat is the best option for you. Sounds to me like you don't have much experience with cats and are wanting to adopt for all the wrong reasons. And since you've told me you plan to declaw, we're going to deny your application anyway. Perhaps you'd like to give this some more thought before you adopt a cat."

At this point they are usually very mad, or trying to argue with me, but I've already made up my mind. It's not like they can do anything. I have the power to reject them so they usually try to suck up. If they end up storming out, I'm usually glad, but then I always know that they will probably just pick up some free farm kitten somewhere. That's usually what happens.

SOME PEOPLE, RIGHT? THE NERVE!!!

I did not know if the person was able to adopt the cat. It was closing time and the staff told her to come back tomorrow. So, I don't know. I really hope not. Looking back, I should have talked to the staff after the lady left and tell her not to accept the adoption. I really hope she did not get to adopt.....

I think I will call my the shelter and ask them what their adoption policy is and maybe tell them to be more strict about it.
