My foster mom cat was doing so great with her 3-week-old babes. They all have URI's and are on amoxicillin. The orange tabby kitten (male) that used to be the strong one is becoming more of the weaker kitten. He's been wheezing and gurgling a lot, now one of his eyes is sticking shut. I took them in for a foster check-up today. The tech pretty much said to continue what I've been doing.

Right before I left for the appt., momma was acting really weird toward the orange tabby. She was kind of batting him and playing with him like he was a mouse or something. Now this mom must have never been exposed to toys, has no idea what to do with a toy. It seemed so mean what she was doing to the baby, biting, batting, whacking, he's still a newborn.

And then this evening I came in the foster room (a.k.a. my office) and mom had found a slit in the cardboard that prevents my fosters from getting behind my desk. She took herself and the other two kittens behind my desk. I don't know if she just didn't get to the tabby yet, or if she wasn't planning on taking him. I know it's not odd for moms to move their babies, especially after going for a car ride and coming back. I just wondered if she's starting to abandon this tabby.

All evening she hasn't spent as much time with any of the kittens. Usually she's in the nest constantly. She seems to be spending a lot of time away from them all of the sudden. I've actually been bringing her babies to her one at a time to nurse. She is letting them nurse and cleaning them, but she's not really gone to them all evening.

I don't have a constant eye on them, so I'm only seeing what I can when I'm in the office. But the odd behavior has me worried.

Also, mom is being very vocal today. She's been with me for a week tomorrow and this is the most I've heard her. Constantly meowing for no real reason. At first I just thought she was going stir crazy. I think she was 100% outside cat before she came to me.

I think Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m going to pick up some formula just in case…

Any thoughts?

Excuse the long post…

It does sound like she is trying to abandon the one kitten. Maybe she does not want that kitten near the other kittens because it is so sick. As for the meowing it sounds like she might be in heat again.
