Jack, our newest little kitten, appears to have a broken back toenail.
It's dark colored like maybe some litter is stuck in it. He doesn't act like it's bothering him. Is there anything I can do or should I just keep an eye on it and let it be?

I'd keep it clean and check it to be sure its not becoming infected. Sometimes you do get a dark nail on a cat.

It's for sure broken, actually I think it's split. It's not in one piece. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks!

Is it split like down the middle or more like a layer coming off the outside edge? Cats shed their nails all the time... meaning the outside sheath comes off... After Oliver's soft paws fall off and I don't replace them right away, he sometimes gets nails that shed but kinda hang on like a hangnail - I just gently pull them off and then re-cap him... as for the color of the nail: what color(s) is your kitty? If he's got any darker pigments in him at all, it's very possible for him to have a dark nail or two... for example: Oliver's orange, so all his nails are white, but my dog is a black lab and all her nails are black... I've seen tons of animals with multiple colored nails

Sounds like the nail is about to shed and he's got some stuff stuck in it. I would just keep an eye on it; it will probably go away on it's own, but watch for signs of infection, warmth/fever, swelling, redness...
