MEEEEEOW!

Can't we all just get along here? Why quibble at all?

Bottom line: Hurricanes are scary, be they a 1, a 3 or a 5 when they hit land. For those of you over in the UK who have never experienced one, be thankful. The damage they can cause is unreal. All this time later, the suicide rate in the Gulf of Mexico is rising higher and higher due to post traumatic stress.

Personally, living in Massachusetts, we only get hit with them once every 30-60 years, and then they usually are just pretty heavy wind storms. For us the most damage comes from the tidal surges, which erodes the shoreline, takes houses with it, and floods low-lying areas.

By the way, I'm not a mod, but I DO know that personal attacks are against the rules here at TCS, and most of us TCS members would REALLY appreciate it if posts made here (or anywhere on TCS for that matter) could be made less personally derisive.

The reason why I donated money to Peru was because it hit close to me.

I'm done arguing with you. If you want to argue with somebody go to the IMO forum.

Clarification: I said we get hit with a hurricane every 30-60 years. Not true, I meant hit by a SEVERE hurricane every 30-60 years.

Sorry about the error.

I'm not bragging at all. Katrina is the worst storm to hit the US but she was not the strongest. I just want people to post the facts. I understand people don't keep up with these kind of stuff, but I do. I love following hurricanes, and I am a member on two weather forums. Oh, and I know you were not serious, but I didn't like your little joke!

I was not bragging either, and baby girl you might have misunderstood what I said, I did not say Katrina was the strongest, I was telling people who might not know that a 5 is the strongest.

And I did not like the little joke either, a hurricane is nothing to joke about.

And for the record Belinda and I were not going back and forth. I love her, I think she's very nice and she's a huge college football fan just like me. Like I said earlier I just want people to post the facts.
I think we just misunderstood what the other was saying

How strong are the Hurricanes that hit the Northeast? I could look it up, but I'm lazy.

I don't think me and babygirl were attacking one another

True they don't happen that often here, but the western part of the UK was affected by hurricane Annie, and we have had hurricane force winds.

In 1987 we were hit by a cyclone with gale-force 12 (ie. hurricane strength) winds. The difference between a cyclone and a hurricane is in the area it covers, not its strength. People lost their lives, their homes, roads were blocked for days, and part of our village was without electricity for nearly a month.

It was absolutely terrifying, we spent the night huddled under the kitchen table listening to the screaming wind and trees and parts of nearby buildings being torn apart and crashing into our walls. It seemed as if it was never going to end. Not an experience I want to repeat any time soon.

They are so rare up here that I think I've lived through only 2 or 3 of them in 40 years. I think Gloria was a Category 2 when she hit 20-some-odd years ago, but was quickly downgraded. I could be wrong. I am not a weather afficianado.

I do know that they tend to slow as they come up the east cost due to the colder ocean temperatures. They gain strength over warm water, that's why they can be so devastating to the Gulf areas.

We were not disrespecting the loss of human life or animal life, me and babygirl know just how serious a hurricane can be, since we both have experienced many.

There's no point arguing! Hurricanes effect different people in different ways, it doesn't matter how strong it is. When hurricanes hit some peoples entire lives are ruined to the point where they've got no family or friends left and no where to live. Hurricanes are definitely nothing to joke about!

Wow, a category 2! That is strong for the Northeast. Have you ever seen the show "It could happen tomorrow" on the weather channel? They had a show about a major hurricane hitting NY.
That is really scary! I hope that never happens.

I don't remmeber which hurricane it was but we had a nasty one in 84/85. Mom & I lived in an apt with cheap windows. I was so scared. I was 11 at the time. I don't remember any other hurricanes though. We did have a tornado come thru in late 90's. I never thought Philly would be hit by one. My cousins up the street lost power for 3 days but they where told it would be weeks.

Wilma did a lot of damage to my roof. It took 2 years for my insurance to give me the $18,000 I needed to get my roof fixed. Meanwhile, I was afraid of another hurricane coming here because of my roof.

You live in Philly! In 2003 I remember some kind of tropical moisture going there. I don't know if it was a tropical storm or a cat 1 hurricane. I do remember the Marlins and the Phillies moving the game to 12 pm because of the storm that was coming.

Gloria hit in Sept of 1985, if I recall correctly - probably the same one I'm thinking of.
