I went to do laundry yesterday and noticed that Riley had pooped in the laundry basket! The only reason I could think of that he might do this is because the towels from the foster kitten's cage were in there.

(background, had a foster kitten for 2 weeks, Riley HATED her, she is gone to a new foster home this past weekend).

He is healthy as can be and has had vet visits very recently, is up to date on all his shots, had revolution and a fecal check, everything is fine, and has NEVER had any litter box issues. Do you think he did it because he smelled her on the towels in there?

It would seem like that to me. I am no expert but our Tosh use to be a toot with showing us his dislike of something. When he was younger he had a bad habit of pooping in the sink of the person he was upset with. For instance my husband would move him off some place he was comfy so he would go poop in my husband's sink. It would seem that Riley is definitely showing his displeasure.

Yes I agree, he was marking that area with his poop. Another thing cats do when confronted with an "intruder" is to leave their poop uncovered in the litter box to make sure it is known that they are the owners of the territory.

She was in a large cage most of the time, because he would hurt her if she wasn't, but there were a few times she got in his litter box and it really made him mad when he found her in there. He was not allowed in her cage when she wasn't in it, but I'm sure he smelled her on the towels. I really hope thats all it was.
