They may have also turned off the power if they are already getting the feeder bands. Guam did that when we had a supertyphoon (catagory 5) came through for safety.

Many prayers and vibes. I hope they got to a safe place!

We're all thinking of you, Rigel!

Does anyone know where the hurricane is at now?

I have it on CNN right now and it looks like it won't hit Merida head on.. but then again I'm not a weatherman!

Here's the updated satellite image, and I added Merida with the red kitty paw. I think I'm close anyway.

It looks like Merida won't be in the direct path of the eye, but I think it's on the strong side of the hurricane.

Hijacking momentarily to say:

(1) thank you, m'dear -- and it's nice to see you around more lately!

(2) many thanks to Reese'sPBC, who took time to educate me on the posting of sigs and avatars so I was finally able to get the blasted things to work!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread...

Sending lots of safety vibes. this is one horrible storm, and will hit at cat 5 strength. After Katrina, Rita and Wilma, I just dread the thought of a large storm anywhere.

Stay safe Rigel and all others in the path of Dean.

I hope everyone stays safe and am praying for them.

Slight hijack
Does anyone have any idea where it is heading to? What is the path of the storm?

Karma,
Dean is supposed to cross the Yucatan tomorrow, then hit the gulf ( which is 87 degrees) and increase in intensity. then is it is supposed to hit central Mexico, probably still at a Cat 3-4.

Once in central Mexico there are two possible paths. A north turn up Mexico then through central New Mexico. Or straight across Central Mexico then up the Baja Peninsula.

(I only know this because I live in New Mexico and we need the rain, but a straight upturn could cause catastrophic flooding here even if Dean is down to only a tropical depression by then. Forecasters here are hoping for the offshore track which will send moisture this way, but not excessive. Lots of talk about Dean in our weather tonight. It is a very scary storm.

Sending continued "stay safe" vibes.

I found this:

http://www.yucatan.com.mx/noticia.asp?cx=11$3403000000$3622461&f=20070821

After sending it through a translator program it says:

"Of" it forgives to Mérida The cyclone only will leave rains and winds of tropical storm

If "Of" does not it change unceremoniously of route, only will affect Mérida with rains and winds of tropical storm since the dawn until near the six in the afternoon.

They would not be devastating winds, but there can be gusts of wind of 100 kilometers per hour, sufficient to knock down branches, announcements, sheets and to cause accidents, according to Enrique Alcocer I Suffice, director of Civil Protection of the City Hall. From 5 to 10 in the morning the winds would be of 63 mph, from 10 to 1 in the afternoon the most intense, of 90 mph, and from 1 to 6 in the afternoon, again of 63 mph.

As the government of the State decreed last night the red warning in all the company, by law there should not be service of collective, urban buses neither taxis, but the users indicated that they will labor normally unless the streets be blocked by cables, posts or trees.

There it will not be consultations in the hospitals (only ER) and the authorities ask to call al 066 only if is a matter of an emergency that endanger the life.
