Does anyone else think this is wierd???

Sure having your air compressor running 24/7 isn't a crime, but if you've seen a lot of weird things, call the police anyway. Just tell them listen, I know this isn't illegal, but there are some other things around here that seem weird and out of place, so you may want to keep your eye on this.

You need to ask them. Knock on the door (with your husband) and say, "I know this is a weird question, but we were just wondering what that noise is - is it an air compressor?"

You will probably get a logical explanation. Heck, maybe they are very nice people but keep to themselves for any number of reasons. What ever happened to communication?

Just because there is power running to the house doesn't mean they will use grid power, it could still be running from a generator, and many people hook an air compressor up to their generators to properly exhaust 'dirty air'

If they keep to themselves, it could also be a mental or physical illness issue. My grandad had a lung disease and they had a compressor like machine to pump out the air and clean it and recycle it back in, or in the case of a mental illness, it could be something extreme that they don't like sharing 'polluted' air

There are lots of legal reasons they could be running one

You know....I`m really afraid to just come out and ask them.....on the very outside chance that they would have this girl held captive....people that think they may be going to be found out, could actually DO something worse to get rid of evidence.....even though , like I said....it`s a really "outside chance" that what we have joked about could be true. (Wierd things like that really do happen, I hate to say)
Today i`m leaving to go out of town to be with my folks for a few days as my Mom just had a knee repalcement and is getting out of the hospital....and my step dad was a cop for many years....I think I`ll mention this to him and see what he thinks would be best to do or not to do.

You know, they do sound odd, but my stepdad did a lot of work around the house when they had one, and the air compressor was turned on for over 20 years.
The compressor motor should only kick on when the tank pressure drops, so if you are hearing the compressor motor all that time, they either use it a lot (doubtful) or the tank doesn't hold pressure.

Maybe they just leave it on to make everybody wonder.

Kinda an expensive "practical joke" though, don`t you think?
These guys don`t seem much like joksters anyhow.

If you go over and talk to them, say that you are there on behalf of the neighbours. That way they won't "do" anything to you, as other people will know where you are. I'm sure they aren't stupid enough to do something out in the open. I am sure that there is a simple explanation.

I was just kidding. I would say maybe they don't even know it's on but those things are so loud I don't think you could not know.

Its a odd situation for sure. The world is full of odd people and odd behavior.And strange things go on behind closed doors. I would find out what is being run all the time and why. Either by asking them or calling the police and express your concerns.
If nothing is going on wrong then good. But if something bad is going on then it needs to looked into.

Have you decided what you are going to do yet? I am really curious about this now....

If you're going to do anything, I would just ask them about the noise...especially if it's rural and there's little else around the noise could drive you mad. Tell them it's bothering you at night. They will probably give you a logical explanation, or they will tell you to butt the heck out of their business.

I don't think anyone's accusing them of murder or kidnapping, but it does sound like they're disturbing the peace.

I'm curious too if you've contacted the police about this. Or what were the results?

If this was my neighbors I would walk over and ask if they can turn it off Saturday night since you are having a bbq. Just say at night it gets loud and you want to be able to have people over with out yelling to them. Just make sure you do something outside. You never you being nice and asking for something simple could open up the communication.

I'd go over,, and kind of talk to them.. Bring them cookies or something for the kids.

Be like I haven't been over since you bought the house,, wanted to say Hi and see how you were doing.. Make up some stuff,, like you heard they were gonna bring pipes down the road or something,, was wondering if they heard about that,, ((small talk)).. Then bring up the compressor.. Be like do you guys leave that compressor on all the time,, since you'll notice it.. and see what they say?? If it's fishy call the police, if it's not,, then you feel better.. What's it gonna hurt to talk to your neighbors,, better then thinking the worse of them,, and just talk to them.. It doesn't have to be accusations,, just a weird question.. You could round it off with,, you know my uncle or friend such and such works on compressors,, you should have him look at that,, maybe he can help it hold pressure better.. blah blah blah

You might want to consider to, that if they recently moved to that area they might not really know how to be "neighborly" if they are from the city it might be normal to them to not interact with neighbors. When I lived in Las Vegas I didn't know any of my neighbors more than just waving if you passed them outside. That was totally normal there. In Spokane people are SHOCKED and think it is so rude to not talk to your neighbors. Just a thought .
