We had one cat that was a former stray who liked to scratch the door frames, I taped aluminium foil in those spots and got her a good log that she could scratch on instead.

Wood was the only thing she liked, wouldn't go for a regular sisal or carpet scratch post.

HMMMM I have not tried a wooden scratching post yet. I have 2 HUGE scratching posts that I bought, but he refuses to use them.............the only thing he uses is the darn doorframes.

I'm going to have to find something made out of wood he can claw to death, the only thing that worries me is slivers.

A lot of cats can be discouraged from scratching on the door frames if you place a scratching post next to the doorway...maybe try one made from a log?

Back in the day, we had an inside/outside kitty that really shaved down the deck posts. Dad made a scratching post out of a log, placed it near the deck post she was using, and viola! she went for the better scratching surface...I think the key is not just wood, but a tall post that makes it possible to get a good stretch.

One of mine did that. I sanded and repainted the door frame and bought her a sisal upright post. That seemed to do it. She had other posts but none were as satisfactory as the door frame until I found the new one. I know that's not a sure thing with your cat but it's worth a try! Good luck.

We had to buy a driftwood scratcher for Lily and place it next to the stair rail as she was scratching that (she does door frames too). I've got sticky paws up there now, but she still does it and she's really made a mess of things (needed to be replaced or refinished anyway). She likes the driftwood scratcher. It was made by a company in the area, but we live near the shore, so driftwood is plentiful. Someone asked why I didn't make it myself, but by the time I drove around, found the right wood, got a base, etc. etc. I would have invested nearly as much.

Of course now she's discovered that she can climb her little tree and hoist herself up on the railing - I'm just waiting for her to fall! Fortunately, it's not a really long way to the landing below...
