I'm trying to save a little, abandoned sphinx cat from starvation. He's friendly. I feed him every day and give him water, by the parking lot of my apartment building. He's not full-grown. Can't adopt him, have 2 cats already. If you live in Dayton, Ohio area, and would like to have him, contact me. He trusts me and would let me pick him up. I could arrange for you to pick him up.

Poor little thing!
Is there a nearby no kill shelter you can take him to? He may have a better chance of being adopted there.

Here... or There... Hmmm
Poor little baby! Keep feeding him and hope that someone is able to keep him. Is there any way you can bring him home till you can find someone to keep him permanently? It would be so much better for him.

Whoah, Eaassssy people, before you contact a rescue, (or rehome it yourself) you should make sure this cat isn't lost. It's not every day someone turns out an unwanted sphynx.

I'm surprised the "rescue" is so quick to jump on taking this cat before asking if you've tried the routine efforts to find the owner.

I am about 2.5 hours from Dayton and my first thought was "OMG I've so desperately always wanted a sphynx, I should see if it's still available!!!!" But I'd much rather see at least some sort of ATTEMPT to find the original owners.....

I understand your concern, but the rescue is eager to help because that's what they do. If this cat is, in fact, a Sphynx and is lost and in need of help, this group is most qualified to be of assistance. Obviously, they'd contact the person who's caring for the cat to get a better feel for the situation and scan for a microchip to see if the cat belongs to someone.

I agree with Eilcon, a purebred sphynx is likely to have a microchip. I do hope and pray that this sphynx is quickly rescued, whether lost or abandoned.

sphynxrescue's profile says they're in NORTHEAST ohio.

The person who found the cat is in Dayton.

It is a reasonable assumption that there are at least one or two shelters/veterinarians with access to a chip reader in Dayton?

I see no reason to transport this cat to another area in the state to try to locate the owner.

lamaestra, did you ask that the cat be scanned by your vet or local shelter? Place found ads in your local paper? Post found posters (no picture, no description, just contact information) in your neighborhood?

All these things would prove much more difficult for a "rescue" to do from another city.

I'm aware of that, as is the director of the rescue, whom I have been in email contact with. They have a network of rescuers and other resources throughout the state. While it's true a shelter or vet in Dayton could easily scan for a chip, it seems to also make sense to have a local person with links to the rescue involved if need be for the sake of the cat, even if just to offer advice support and advice to the original poster. That's why the suggestion to contact a breed specific rescue was offered. Obviously, the first step, if it hasn't already been done, is to try to locate the owner. No one said anything about transporting the cat to find it's owner. The rescue just wants to help with the cat if need be and that's the priority here. Having a breed specific rescue involved makes sense for the welfare of the cat and the good of his/her owners, if they're out there. If not, this rescue is in the best position to foster and rehome the cat through it's local network.

Hi Bossy,

the thread is 6 years old. I am sure the cat has a very happy home now!

I'd suggest looking into your local shelters for cats for adoption.
