I remember the first time Mitten was ever shown. The judge (it was only one judging for the HHP's at that show) admitted he did not like tabby cats. And he didn't pick ANY tabby cat in his finals! I thought that was kinda un-professional. There were many pretty tabbys in the show.

The following year, we took him back to the same show/club. And that's where he got Best HHP over 55 other cats!

Slightly off topic (but related). Mentioned to Nancy about how well Demetri was doing in the shows. She was not surprised by the size of your Ocis - she agreed that using the bigger Abys was probably the reason they were bigger then the American Oci's

I asked Nola for her thoughts, here is (some of) what she said.

I also find our cats are bigger than overseas cats. I think this is because we feed them raw beef, chicken, kangaroo, etc. I think a lot of overseas countries don't have the supply of fresh meat for cats like we do. And the other factor is muscle growth - we more often than not have lots of room for our cats to jump, run, and generally work up lots of big muscles, which in turn are encouraged by their diet of red meat and other good things.

RE the theory of being outcrossed to Aussie Aby's

As far as I know I am the only Oci breeder in Australia to have a Supplementary Breeding Permit which allows me to cross-breed back to the Aby. I have only two lines going from this cross - One is only 6 months old, but already a pretty big boy. The UK import, is not as big as my boys, nor is the NZ import.

The NZ breeders do a lot of cross-breeding back to the Aby which is good for the health and strength of the Oci breed

There was one breeder who tried cross-breeding a few years back without much success and is now not breeding.

And remember, the Oci is meant to be a medium to large sized cat - so that's how we breed them!!

I disagree with the diet being the reason for larger cats. Still say its the bigger abys in the background. While she might be outcrossing them more then other breeders - the cats would still have the influence.

Also Nancy mentioned about using the classic pattern to produce the larger spots as is called for in the standard (CFA). Roger said that they only used the classic a few times as the more spotted to spotted you use, the less "throwbacks" you get in the ticked, classic or ghost Oci's.

He sees no real reason why the Aby should be used any more in the outcrosses. Its not needed for the lines here.
