I just also want to say that it's really easy to say that people who adopt cats on looks or labels are superficial. But, honestly, how many threads are there here about what your favorite color/pattern/breed of cat is?
Honestly, if you want to say that being attracted to a certain look is superficial, then I admit to being superficial. I made a comment in a thread about wishing that I was closer to Ohio because I would love a dilute calico. That's how I got Ginger. Half of my cats are black, because I love black cats. How much of a cat's personality can you really see in the less than 10 minutes you get to meet a kitty in a shelter/rescue situation? Ophelia was a true rescue - we didn't choose her and she didn't choose us per se - but I've always loved black and white kitties, and I think she's one of the prettiest girls ever.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't take in a tabby or a buff or a whatever colored cat if it was in need, but yes, I am attracted to a "look". It happens to not be associated with a specific breed, but when I'm in Petsmart (I'm not allowed to go to rescues LOL) I am drawn to the black cats more than the white cats. I am drawn to the dilute calicos and torties more than the tabbies. And I am drawn to the tux/black and whites more than the buffs. Does that really make me a bad person?
Look honestly at the cats who are your "favorites" (even though every cat here is gorgeous in their own way, personality, idiosyncracies and love) on the site and what colors you have in your house. I would have to think that probably 90+% of us have a favorite look, whether or not breed specific. I can only think of 3-4 rescuers that I personally know who truly show no color preference, but rather do show a preference in the "type" of cat (ferals, FeLV, special needs/otherwise unadoptable), and I know for sure that at least one of those 3-4 does have a secret proclivity to one color/pattern.
