Question: I live in Bangkok and picked up two street kittens about four months
ago. They have been and still are full of worms (definitely roundworms, maybe
others). I had been taking them to one vet and they were treated for worms
there, but due to language problems (I don't know exactly what was given to
them, how often, etc) I began going to a different vet. They were spayed and
neutered at this new vet's and I requested worm treatment as I saw no
improvement in the situation. They were treated with Revolution. Still no
obvious improvement - I mean, the cats sleep on my bed and when I wake up the
bed is littered with 20-30 dried up roundworms every morning. They are
everywhere. I purchased more Revolution and treated them both again several
weeks ago. No change. If anything there are more dried up worms around. I
partially suspect that the increase in worms is an indicator that the medicine
is working - they are exiting the cats en masse, but I don't know and it's been
several months with no improvement. This cannot be an unsolvable problem. What
can I do???

Welcome to TCS ... I am not sure how easy vet care is to get where you are ... but the vet should be able to take a stool sample and test WHAT TYPE of worms you are dealing with and then treat them

Do the dried up worms look like pieces of rice? You may need to ask that they be treated for tapeworm. Revolution only kills roundworm and hookworm. Sometimes tapeworm can't be found in stool samples. You could use a piece of tape and collect a few of the dried up specimans from their bedding and take them in to be "scoped". I've done that before!

It sounds like tapeworm to me also. My kitty has that right now....very disgusting, but he is going the vet tomorrow. Hope you solve your kitty's problem.

You do need to find out what type of worm it is.

Worms, however, are treated in cycles, because it is the adult parasite that is treated, not the eggs, so dewormer will have to be administered around three weeks after the first treatment.

While dealing with the worms, if the kitties are inside only and using litter boxes, you MUST bleach the boxes weekly. If you can afford to use new litter, that's best. And scoop those boxes as frequently as you can in the meantime. You'll have to do this for the six to eight weeks it's going to take to get rid of the parasite(s).

Good luck,

Laurie
