A few of my cats have some of the same cats in the pedigree several times. I feel this is in-breeding. I have been told this is line breeding. I have been told if you feel the cat has 2 good traits you may want to lock it in and this is why this is done. I am still trying to get this line breeding thing. Can someone help me out. Is it line breeding or in-breeding? Or are the to the same?

Line breeding is done to enhance a particular genetic trait, to my knowledge and I have seen this a lot with persians. I did see a reference to it somewhere recently and will look it up for you. I do know that there are people against line breeding or "tight line breeding" as they feel it could also enhance bad traits.....let's see what the forum comes up with. There are so many knowledgable and helpful people here.

My kitten comes from a breeder, and line breeding is used in the cattery we got him from. My understanding of it (and please correct me if I'm wrong, this is just some reading I've done on my own) is that it is often used if there is a limited number of breeding stock, or alternatively, to produce specific characteristics in kittens in that particular breed (because with outcrossing, the use of two unrelated animals, it is impossible/difficult to determine the characteristics of the kittens).

From what I can tell, cats in direct line eg mother and son, father and daughter, brother and sister, aren't bred in line breeding, I think that is what is referred to as inbreeding.

A google search for "line breeding" brings up some articles that may be helpful.
